25 things dissappearing from America

Post by Rollo Tomassi »

Here's the whole story.

For you lazy fuckers. Here's the list.

25. Pit toilets
24. Yellow Pages
23. Classified Ads
22. Movie Rental Stores
21. Dial-Up Internet
20. Phone Landlines
19. Blue Crabs
18. VCRs
17. Ash Trees
16. Ham Radio
15. Swimming Holes
14. Answering Machines
13. Cameras that use film
12. Incandescent bulbs
11. Bowling Alleys
10. Milkmen
9. Handwritten Letters
8. Wild Horses
7. Personal Checks
6. Drive-Ins
5. Mumps/Measles
4. Honey Bees
3. News Magazines/TV News
2. Analog TV
1. Family Farms

And now some commentary.

Pit toilets? Yeah, indoor plumbing is a good thing.
Yellow Pages. As more people go online, this is a natural progression. Not really a good/bad thing, but more of a nostalgia thing.
Classifieds. Same thing. Print is giving way to digital. Some lament that without Classifieds, print newspapers wont survive much longer, and that does bother me.
Movie Rental Stores. one word:Netflix. And really, Video Rental stores never should have gotten a foothold in the first place. That was Blockbuster bullying Studios into making VHS available for $200 initially or some shit like that, and only being sold for $49.95 months later, so people would be forced to rent their fave films at first. When DVD came out the studios told Blockbuster to fuck off and started releasing them for sale same day as rentals. That was the beginning of the end.
Dial-Up. Ugh. My parents still use dial-up. Why? I don't know.
Phone landlines. Everything is going cellular. Eventually, they can take down the hundred million miles of phonelines crisscrossing the country and ruining the view.
Blue Crabs. First thought is who gives a crap? But if you think about it, it disrupts the entire economy of an entire region of the country and that will eventually ripple out and affect everyone. Scary.
VCRs. Just as Vinyl gave way to cassettes gave way to CDs. Its called progress people.
Ash Trees. They goeth the way as did the mighty Elm. Gargantuanly shitty. Goddamn foreign bugs. Probably from France. :frus:
Ham Radio. Uhmmm..yeah. That's because this isn't 1970.
Swimming Holes. Nobody wants to get sued.
Answering Machines. This goes with the no landlines thing.
Film in Cameras. This will always be a niche thing. But the huge implication is that movies will eventually be shot and distributed digitally, which will save BILLIONS of dollars long term ( but you will still have to pay $12 for a ticket because the studios will pocket all that savings)
Incandescent bulbs. This is not a bad thing. If they had found a way to make energy saving eco friendly bulbs a hundred years ago, they would have. Stop clinging to useless old ways.
Bowling Alleys. There will always be bowling alleys. Just not as many. Or they will be in Chuck E. Cheese.
Milkmen. Really? There are still milkmen? Wow. Let it go, man.
Handwritten letters. This makes me sad.
Wild horses. These are seen as giant rats and are discussed in terms of selectively euthanizing them.
Personal checks. I saw this coming. Think of all the paper we'll save.
Drive-ins. There will always be drive-ins. Somewhere.
Mumps and measles. This isn't a bad thing. WTF? Who the fuck gets nostalgic over disease??!
Honey Bees. This is pretty fuckin' serious and nobody seems to realize it.
News. Also pretty sad when you think about the implications.
Analog TV. Is this absolutely neccassary? I don't know all the details but this seems likes it being foisted on us by somebody who would benefit from digital transmission, like cable and sattelite companies.
Family farms. Also pretty serious. Unless you're a "family tobacco farm" with your government subsidies. Who the fuck are you kidding? Makes me want to slap all of Washington DC upside the head.

Well, I feel foolish. I'll probably be getting a job at a video store next month. Eh, on second thought, no I don't. It's a local mom-and-pop place, it makes good business, and all I'd do is pretty much watch movies all day.

But a lot of the stuff on that list is gone already, like VCRs and dial-up internet.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

i'm not lazy... well, not in this instance. the site just won't fucking load the next page already!!!
Yellow Pages. As more people go online, this is a natural progression. Not really a good/bad thing, but more of a nostalgia thing.
i dunno... i got like, 7 different phonebooks thrown on my front porch in the past few weeks. think of the paper we'll save on this one!
Classifieds. Same thing. Print is giving way to digital. Some lament that without Classifieds, print newspapers wont survive much longer, and that does bother me.
print dying only really makes me sad about comics. and the few author's books that i want on my shelf. other than that, meh.
Movie Rental Stores.
blockbuster can go fuck themselves. right-wing movie editing money grubbing fucks. A-1 Video on nassau blvd. was the SHIT, and they got trounced by lackluster video. have you been in one recently? seriously, someone shampoo those damn carpets!
Dial-Up. Ugh. My parents still use dial-up. Why? I don't know.
can we finally put AOL out of our misery?
Phone landlines. Everything is going cellular. Eventually, they can take down the hundred million miles of phonelines crisscrossing the country and ruining the view.
think of all the copper they'll be able to sell!
Blue Crabs. First thought is who gives a crap? But if you think about it, it disrupts the entire economy of an entire region of the country and that will eventually ripple out and affect everyone. Scary.
similar to the honeybees, this one is rather problematic - i'm sure there will be an infestation of whatever it is that the crabs live off of... causing even more species to suffer.
Ash Trees. They goeth the way as did the mighty Elm. Gargantuanly shitty. Goddamn foreign bugs. Probably from France. :frus:
there goes some more oxygen we need...
Answering Machines. This goes with the no landlines thing.
answering machines always sucked anyway.
Film in Cameras. This will always be a niche thing.
yes, there will never be anything that looks like actual film, and certain pockets of humanity will keep the practice alive.
Handwritten letters. This makes me sad.
truth.
Wild horses. These are seen as giant rats and are discussed in terms of selectively euthanizing them.
i haven't even heard of the selective euthanization...
Personal checks. I saw this coming. Think of all the paper we'll save.
i think i've written out 5 in my life so far.
Drive-ins. There will always be drive-ins. Somewhere.
seriously. was this list started in the 80's? because, then, yeah... i would've agreed with the inclusion, but there have been a lot of stalwarts out there...
Mumps and measles. This isn't a bad thing. WTF? Who the fuck gets nostalgic over disease??!
the medical community is upset because then it's one less vaccination they can't charge your HMO for.
Honey Bees. This is pretty fuckin' serious and nobody seems to realize it.
rampant die-off of plant species that are dependent on honeybees for pollination will hopefully be a wake-up call... however, it will basically be too late by then.
News. Also pretty sad when you think about the implications.
meh. news hasn't been ACTUAL news for about 30 years. it's just sensationalist crap between commercial breaks. "rape, murder, pillage, plunder. now buy this crap, it will make you feel more secure and safe in your little nihilistic bubble."
Analog TV. Is this absolutely neccassary?
no.
I don't know all the details but this seems likes it being foisted on us by somebody who would benefit from digital transmission, like cable and sattelite companies.
yes.
Family farms. Also pretty serious.
true, though it's coming back. organic/sustainable farming is a big trend. community supported agriculture too. check out books like "the omnivore's dilemma" and the movie "the true dirt on farmer john".
Life is short. STUNT IT!

Analog TV going away frees up alot of bandwidth for emergency situations. It isnt needed but it does alot of good.

Ash trees are the good baseball bats too - the new Maple ones absolutely explode when they break and ARE going to kill someone someday. You heard it here first.

Most of the shit on that list I can do the fuck without - no doubts there. I noticed "virginity" didn't make the list - I'm guessing it was number 26.
