Is a hot dog a sandwich?

Meat surrounded by bread... I'd say yes.

If a gyro is a sandwich, then a hot dog is, too.

As devil's advocate, I'd like to point out that it is unneccasary to have the two pieces of bread in order for it to be recognized as a hot dog.

It's only one piece, but it is surrounded on three sides.

I understand that. But you can take the actual meat out of the bun and it is still a meal. The bun is not a defining characteristic of the hot dog. Thus, it may not be a sandwich.

Such as you cannot have a pizza without three defining components: crust, sauce, cheese.

or a ham sandwich without ham and bread.

But you can have a hot dog without a bun.

No, because then it ceases to be a hot dog and becomes merely a weiner. At least that's the way I've always understood it.

I concur. The difference between a wiener and a real hot dog is the bun.
