How I realized I was over Star Wars completely

movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

I can see the crawl now....
STAR WARS

EPISODE VII: LIGHT OF THE FORCE

"Dammit!!!" he thought as his sleek triangular craft punched through the upper atmosphere of Maltox 6. "Why the hell are we even bothering with this mudball?"

I think I got it. Hand & lightsaber landed in Frassk's cockpit as he patrolled the sky around Cloud City. As he was docking, he threw it at his wingman, but missed. It landed on the Star Destroyer's windshield. It shook loose when the Star Destroyer entered hyperspace and drifted for years...

WHACK! Something fell from the floating city above and cracked the windshield of Frassk's cockpit.

"What the hell was that?" his wingman Fool'tery asked.

"Not sure," said Frassk. But something looked unusual about this particular piece of debris. He opened the cockpit--never a safe thing to do while cruising along at 500 MPH in thick atmosphere--to retrieve it.

"OH MY GOD, IT'S A HAND!!"

Despite his revulsion, Fool'tery convinces him it might be important. He has it in his pocket when Vader admits to him he cut off Luke's hand. "I think I might be able to help," says Frassk. "We could mail it back to him, or something."

"Eh, the mail's too slow and it'd just rot," says Vader. "What could I do with it? Just toss it in the garbage, or something. But hurry--we're about to go into hyperspace, and you want to get rid of it before the Executor dumps the trash. Don't want that thing stinking up the whole ship all the way back to Coruscant."

Besides you guys fanficking, have you ever seen the nerdery LESS enthused about Star Wars? Seriously, there is NO discussion happening now, just barely a week after SDCC and the reveal of upcoming merch. I think this is the lowest activity I've seen on the Canadian board since I started back in around 2002 when AOTC was coming around.

I think Disney doesn't know how to manipulate (and I'm not using that word negatively here) the fanbase like Lucasfilm did.

Movie comes out next December, right? I get the impression they think Celebration Anaheim will be enough to fire up the fans. But that's a horrible idea.

Of course, this is the studio that turned John Carter of Mars into one of the biggest bombs of the century. :( I don't think it's possible to be that bad with Star Wars, but they're certainly not doing the best work possible.

There's an incorrect assumption among a lot of fans that Lucasfilm no longer exists. It's different, sure, and it's under a new corporate umbrella, but it was already changing before the Disney purchase and most of the people are the same. The SDCC and Celebration events are still planned by Mary Franklin, Rebels is being made by the TCW team, etc.

This Comic-Con was meant to promote Rebels, which it did, since it's coming out in October. I do think that they're doing a better job of promoting Rebels than they did TCW. But there's no use in getting people fired up for a movie that A) everyone's already excited about, B) doesn't come out for another 17 months, and C) they're still filming. Celebration will undoubtedly show more, but remember that the event was planned for April when the movie was supposed to come out in Summer, so by that point I'd be happy with a title and a teaser trailer. I'm sure SDCC 2015 will have a lot of Episode VII, and it'll still be five months before the film. Also remember that JJ is big on secrecy and preserving the storytelling experience until people see it in the theater.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

When Episode I came about, how long was there between the announcement, the first trailer, and the actual release date?

We're a year and a half away from the movie, so I'm glad they aren't hyping it much yet. I've only seen one trailer for the new cartoon and it didn't do much for me. (Rebels is the show with the slammed R2 unit and the McQuarrie Chewbacca concept art looking guy, right?)

EpI was a different animal - they hyped it literally starting in 1997 with the Special Editions - and those were being hyped as far back as 1995 when the modern figures starting showing up again. I recall specifically that the novel & toys hit the stands on May 3, 1999 with the movie coming out on the typical Memorial Day weekend that year (the reason I recall is that May 3 is my birthday), so it's not like we were bombarded with Sneak Preview shit months & months in advance. The only Sneak Preview items I recall were mail-away Mace Windu & a window-boxed STAP with Battle Droid. Don't recall how early those were available.

My first recollection of any Prequel news was 1994 when the Special Editions were announced.
They said George was going to clean up the films and add the new stuff as a warm up for the new trilogy.

The first teaser trailer for Episode 1 debuted on one of those ET type shows and then in theatres before Meet Joe Black in Nov '98. The second trailer came out in March before Wing Commander. That's six months and two months prior to the May release.

I could see them doing some kind of super early teaser for VII this Christmas that doesn't have hardly any footage in it. Just some Williams score to wank fanboys with and a few shots. And then get a proper teaser next May and a full trailer in Sept/Oct.

Really underwhelming, especially because I've been hearing great things.
The whole thing looks and sounds unfinished.

Aladdin is joining the Rebel Alliance? Didn't take long for Disney to start the cross promoting.
They're trying too hard to make the characters hip and likable. Which makes me not. Like them.
That one hijacker looks like the prototype Chewie design.
What system are they on? Dantooine?

I do not that guy's supposed to.

I haven't watched. I'm missing that part of my brain that makes me like Clone Wars... and Spongebob Squarepants and Kingdom Come (well, aside from the art).

They're on Lothal, a new planet based on abandoned Ralph McQuarrie concepts for the Rebel base in ROTJ (which was later recycled as Alderaan in the Art of SW book, I believe).

Ezra's acting a little hip, but it's better than Ahsoka was when she started out.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.
