Saga 71 arrived electronically a week late. Another easy to flip through issue setting up the season-ending 72 in a couple of weeks. I'll never not read Saga, unless I die before they finish it. Hopefully not.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
A relatively small week(for me anyway).
Absolute Superman 3. Mostly a flashback to Krypton where Kal’s parents are prepping a spaceship to leave Krypton with all their family, friends, and neighbors. Because the dickwads in charge are in denial. The present day Earth stuff has been pretty dull, but Jason Aaron is doing great reimagining Krypton and Kal’s origins for this new imprint.
Avengers 22.
Batgirl 3.
Batman 156. Realizing Gordon was framed for killing the mayor using Jervis Tetch’s tech, Batman breaks into Riddler’s lair and climbs his gauntlet of riddles. After he’s beaten, Riddler offers up a clue as to who the new “hero” of Gotham, Commander Star, really is: KGBeast. Zdarsky’s run will finally be over next month, and we get Hush 2 from Loeb and Lee.
Batman:Full Moon 3.
Birds of Prey 17. Since I bought practically all of them at the going out of business sale, I thought I’d keep current with it.
Cable:Love and Chrome 1.
Sam Wilson:Captain America 1. Legacy number 767. Did the previous Cap series end?
Daredevil 17. My god, these JRJr covers are wretched.
Deadpool/Wolverine 1.
Saga 71. Still haven’t caught up reading this. *sigh*
Spider Gwen 9. Legacy number 69. Nice. After Mister Fear douses Gwen with his fear gas, her new frenemy Black Tarantula shows up to rescue her, and then they take Fear down together. Then BT explains how he’s not really a bad guy and shows Gwen all the homeless people he and his crew have been trying to help. But then his dad shoots that judge they put on trial on social media, so yup they’re still bad guys.
Miles Morales 28. LOL that his Legacy issue is 310, when like 200 of those issues were the original Ultimate Peter’s run. But, wev. T’Challa has taken Miles into the realm of Bast to help him cure his vampirism. But Bast gets offended that T’Challa brought the herald of another god into her realm, to which is a surprise to Miles. Then Anansi the spider-god shows up and says she can cure Miles, but she requires a ‘good story’ and pits Spidey against Black Panther!
Spectacular Spider-Men 11. While helping train their new friend with her new elemental powers in Central Park, the Spideys attract the attention of Seeleys, tiny elemental faeries living in the park, who shrink them down and put them on trial for ‘abominating’ their sacred elements. Meanwhile, the two Electros have kidnapped Curt Connor’s recently resurrected son, who is now a lizardboy, and are holding him hostage so that Connor’s will give them upgrades to defeat the Spiders.
Star Wars:Ahsoka 7.
Ultimates 8. The Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy arrive from the 61st century, looking for their missing member, America Chavez. They describe the time ripple effect of the Maker’s actions in the present that have shattered the future. Lots of cool new variations of characters, and plenty of cool ideas and lore of a future timeline, as well as an ominous prediction about Iron Lad and Doom. That one will save the world and one will destroy it, but they don’t remember which is which. Deniz Camp is rocking this book. His Doom issue was fantastic. This one is right up there. While I’m digging Hickman’s Spidey book, this is easily the best of the new Ultimate books. The BP one is mediocre, and I dropped the X-Men series.
What If…Galactus Transformed the Hulk? The first of five oneshots where a different character becomes Galactus’ herald. Galactus makes a bargain with Banner to leave Earth alone if he comes works for him. And he can’t accidentally destroy anywhere else because the planets are all gonna die anyway, so it won’t be Hulk’s fault. (I think that is some dubious logic, but who knows what goes thru Banner’s mind justifying his decision).
X-Factor 6. This book has been disappointing, but I’ll just point out that the letters pages are almost exclusively people complaining about Rusty and Feral getting killed off in the first issue. Ha.
X-Force 7. La Diabla is attacking Rachel in a psychic space created for her by Betsy, and she’s blocked the rest of the team from entering the space. Forge uses his shaman magic and his mutant power to creat a workaround so that Betsy can get in to save Rachel. Happy ending! Then Colossus shows up on the last page. He’s a villain now??!

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
I started reading the books I got at the store closing sale a couple weekends ago, so I can file them away properly and not be even more perpetually behind. Some of it, like some Batman minis, Birds of Prey and the Flash are before the point where I’m doing my reverse catch up reading, so I just put those in the boxes. But here’s the rest of it. Probably end up being three or four separate posts.
Batman Inc 4. The penultimate part of the first arc(I’d already read issues 1 and 5) where an “evil” Batman Inc team created by Lex Luthor is gunning for GhostMaker’s team. There’s just way too many Batman-themed variant characters here. Bordering on silly.
Batman Inc 6. Professor Pyg returns to Gotham and has managed to capture EVERY SINGLE ONE of Batman’s rogues gallery because he think one of them stole something from him. An event of this magnitude doesn’t seem that important to Batman(its only his ENTIRE ROGUES GALLERY) so he farms the problem out to GhostMaker and the Inc team. Got resolved the following issue, which I don’t have. This book is dumb.
Batman Inc 11, 12. The end of the series. The Joker has created Joker Inc and is holding innocent people hostage unless Batman Inc breaks its no killing rule and kills his Joker Inc team. When Batman Inc refuses, Joker triggers bomb in his Joker Inc members and Batman Inc has to save the hostages from the exploding bad guys. Afterwards, GhostMaker is pissed because the obvious solution would have been to kill Joker years ago and save the subsequent tens of thousands of victims since then. So he disbands the team and goes off on his own. The rest of the team decides to stick together.
Batman:Urban Legends 18, 19. The two issues I was missing from the anthology series. Stories featuring the Signal, Alfred, Etrigan, Tim Drake, the Ventriloquist, Two-Face, and Killer Croc. Nothing remarkable.
Unstoppable Doom Patrol 4. The team psychiatrist evaluates each member in therapy sessions. Sort of a quasi recap of each character, hitting the important beats in their decades of character development.
Doom Patrol 6. The penultimate issue of the mini series. A team of their adversaries joins forces and attacks their base.
Green Arrow 4. Dinah and Roy recruit Cheshire so they can find Roy and Jade’s missing daughter, Lian. Meanwhile Lian and Connor are time traveling in the 31st century looking for the time displaced Ollie. Ollie is trapped in time with Parallax, taking the form of Hal and they get into a fistfight while dealing with unresolved issues.
Green Arrow 6. Ollie is confronted by ‘Old Man Ollie’ from the future, who turns out to be Merlyn in disguise playing some long con revenge plot. Connor and Lian show up and rescue Ollie and bring him back to the present where he is reunited with Dinah(apparently they’d been separated since the Justice League ‘died’ pre-Dark Crisis). Roy and Cheshire are breaking into a govt facility and get ambushed by Amanda Waller and her goons, Peakemaker and Peacewrecker.
Green Arrow 8. Ollie gets killed by Onomatopoeia, and Connor tracks him back to the Brick’s yacht. But it was a ruse, Ollie had secretly donned Ono’s gear so they could find out who hired Brick to hire Ono to kill Ollie, and find out who kidnapped Roy:Amanda Waller(this is all leading to Absolute Power.)
Green Arrow 9-10. Ollie breaks into Hall of Justice, which has been taken over by Amanda Waller. In exchange for freeing Roy, Ollie agrees to break into a hidden Justice League base in the arctic to steal the Sanctuary files for Waller. When he and Connor arrive, they get confronted by Roy’s team; Arrowette, Red Arrow, Red Canary, and Speedy. Ollie hadn’t seen Mia since she got ‘erased’ by the Nu52 bullshit, so they had a lovely reunion. Then Ollie enters the facility alone and get attacked by Roy, who thinks Ollie is a robot defense mechanism. When they both realize they’re real, Ollie and Roy have a reunion(since Roy had been killed during Heroes in Crisis, and by the time he came back, Ollie had died during Dark Crisis, so they both though the other was dead). Solid heartstring tugging all around from Josh Williamson.
Next up, a bunch of Green Lantern books. The FF will continue to have to wait.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
This week’s books.
Absolute Batman 4. We get a bunch of flashbacks that show how Bruce refined and evolved his Batman costume. Bruce visits Joe Chill in prison.
Amazing Spidey 65.
Aquaman 1. All In. New series.
Batman & Robin 17.
Batman:Dark Patterns 2.
New Champions 1.
Daredevil:Unleash Hell 1. A new “red band” polybagged miniseries starring Elektra.
Zenoscope 2024 Pinup Special. It says Zenoscope, but I’m putting it with all the other GFT pinup specials.
Alligator Loki Holiday Special oneshot. Reprint collection of the digital shorts starring the adorable little alligator. Each story is only a couple pages long, and there’s no dialogue. Similar to the Jeff the Landshark oneshots.
Magik 1. So the small Alaskan town where they just happened to build a Sentinel Factory, and where the X-Men now have their new headquarters, also conveniently happened to have a family who trapped some eldritch being generations ago, and have passed down the responsibility of keeping the barrier to its prison sealed with magic. When it starts to break free, Illyana has to step in and help stop the creature from escaping.
Namor 6. The seven kings have all gathered to fight for the throne of Atlantis. Namor makes a discovery that “will change everything we know” blah blah blah. There are some things Jason Aaron has done well. His Thor was good. His new Absolute Superman is decent. But his Punisher sucked. And this series is fucking boring retreaded tripe.
NYX 7. Synch shows up at Prodigy’s new NYX shelter and challenges him to a fight for putting a target on mutants with his egotistical new project. It’s literally the dumbest reason for them to fight. Then after, Synch is all ‘damn what a good idea. I’m in!’
Star Wars:Battle of Jakku 10. Or 2 of the final arc. Whichever.
Transformers 16. While on Cybertron, Cliffjumper finds the partial sparks of some friends he left behind. Back on Earth, Optimus and the other three Autobots watch Soundwave and Starscream’s ‘Con factions fight with each other. Megatron shows up on the last page.
Ultimate Black Panther 12. The final fight to the death between T’Challa and Konshu that they’ve been building towards for 12 issues finally happens. And right before Black Panther deals the final blow, the new Sorceror Supreme that Storm and Killmonger recruited shows up and stops him. *sad trombone noise* wahwah.
All New Venom 2. Venom fights the Circus of Crime, as writer Al Ewing continues to tease who is wearing the symbiote; Robbie Robertson, Luke Cage, Rick Jones, or Madame Masque. An online article I read made a strong case for it being Jones. His reasoning and conclusions seemed valid.
What If…Galactus transformed Gambit? Galactus needs Remy to steal something from The Collector, so he gives him the power cosmic. Meh.
Wolverine 5. Apparently the very concept of adamantium is sentient and is slowly taking over adamantium based characters like Cyber, Lady Deathstrike, and Constrictor. It attempts to take over Logan, but he’s rescued by his new ward, the teenage Wendigo Leonard, and Nightcrawler in the X-Jet. Tell me they’re running out of ideas over at the House Of…
Uncanny X-Men 8. The conclusion of the Raid on Graymalkin. Xavier gets into a psychic fight with the prison’s resident telepath, Scurvy. As Cyclops and Rogue continue to have different philosophies on the future of the X-Men, the warden threatens both teams’ homes in Louisiana and Alaska if they don’t fuck off. Both teams retreat, leaving Xavier behind, and the mystery of who Inmate X actually is.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Here’s some more reading from the store closing a few weeks ago. Specifically, mostly Green Lantern books.
Green Lantern 3, 4. From the ‘22 series. The Oan Power Battery has been destroyed and the only Lanterns left with working rings are Jo Mullein(from Far Sector) and the teen Lantern Keli, who cobbled together a GL gauntlet powered by her grandma’s ring. While Jo investigates who is behind the power battery’s sabotage, John Stewart is protecting a planet in the dark sector from space pirates. He is soon wisked away by a New God to help fight another New God who’s trying to resurrect several other New Gods using a godstorm from the Source Wall.
GL 6. Keli heads to Korugar to confront Sinestro and the Yellow Lanterns. Jo and Simon Baz, in a suit of battle armor, since his ring was destroyed, show up to stop her and prevent a treaty infraction between Korugar and the United Planets. Jo determines Sinestro was not the one who attacked Oa. John has absorbed the godstorm and “ascended” onto a higher plane of power.
GL 9-12. The mysterious foe turns out to be a Guardian who went rogue and was imprisoned eons ago. He has returned and is trying to destroy the other Guardians and the Lanterns for interfering with the entire universe for so long. As Jo rallies the United Planets with help from Hal Jordan and some Justice Leaguers like Flash and J’onn, John Stewart shows up with his new unlimited Source Wall powers, defeats the rogue Guardian, and replaces the power battery with a new Source Wall battery that powers the new rings for the few hundred remianing Lanterns that survived. Stewart also takes on the title of Emerald Knight with his fancy new powers.
Green Lantern 4-6. From the current ongoing Dawn of DC series. The United Planets have quarantined sector 2184 and reassigned all of Earth’s GLs to other sectors. Hal is trapped on earth with a different ring not synched with the power battery, but he can’t leave Earth’s atmosphere. Sinestro is stuck on Earth and can’t get back to Korugar, so he demands Hal’s ring. When it doesn’t work for him, he threatens to blow up a bunch of cities. Hal gets Barry’s help to find and stop the bombs, which enrages Sinestro and causes his ring to turn him into a Red Lantern. After he fights Hal again, he is able to flee into space, and Hal can’t follow him.
GL 7-8. We get a flashback on how the Earth’s GL were reassigned and a diplomatic mission to Korugar with Hal and Kilowog being bodyguards for the UP’s Premier Thaaros. The mission ends up being a doublecross and Kilowog is killed when the Korugar power battery is blown up.
GL 10-11. Hal is on Oa where Jo and Kyle have set up a secret restistance because they think the UP is up to some shady shit. They try and rescue Keli from a secret interrogation room in the sciencells, and then confront the UP council about Premier Thaaros’ plan to blow up all the power batteries. Only to discover Thaaros and all the council members are actually shape shifting durlans who have infiltrated the United Planets. The series ended with issue 18.
Green Lantern War Journal 3, 12. This was a 12 issue companion series to the Dawn of DC run, starring John Stewart. I only flipped thru them because I was missing the other ten issues, but I guess Stewart’s elderly mother dies at the end, and he turns her into a permanent green construct. Which is weird. And I feel kinda unhealthy for him.
Up next from the store closing stuff, is an Alan Scott mini, Hawkgirl, Justice Society, and Robin. After that it’s a bunch of Action and other Superman stuff.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Some more stuff from the store closing sale last month.
Alan Scott:Green Lantern 1, 2, 4-6. Almost the entire miniseries. An expanded and revised retelling of his origin, adding in his secret homosexuality in the 1930s, and a secret lover who turned out to be a Soviet double agent who got a Red Lantern and became a Soviet supervillain that Scott and the Justice Society had to defeat. And since he’s telling this origin story to his son, Obsidian, when asked about how his two children were born, he’s all ‘Eh. I also banged your mom and had a couple kids.’ Because its a giant gaping plothole in retconning him being gay that they just don’t want to delve into.
Hawkgirl 1-3, 5, 6. A Dawn of DC miniseries. Here’s a random quote from the final issue that sorts explains why I don’t want to sum up what this series is about; “Tis the fate of the Hawks to cross the Fox with the help of the Mushroom Network…” Guest starring a trans lesbian character called Galaxy that DC specifically created to be a trans lesbian character whose first appearance was a graphic novel called Galaxy. While they didn’t make Hawkgirl gay, they made all her supporting characters gay.
Justice Society of America 3. The JSA is helping the Huntress from the future stop the time traveling Per Degaton from killing her future JSA teammates.
JSA 9, 10. Now that her alt future has been erased, Huntress has convinced the JSA to recruit all the villains that were her team in the future. And a young Mordru, who is a supervillain in the 31st century, wants to change his evil future and also asks to join the JSA, but the LoSh arrives from the 31st Century for a showdown. I don’t have the majority of this 12 issue run of JSA, but I’m intrigued enough to want to find and read the rest of the series.
Robin 6, 7. The death tournament whittles its bracket down to eight fighters, then four fighters. And Robin discovers the matron running the tournament is actually his great-grandmother, the mother of R’As Al Ghul.
Robin 9. Connor Hawke has won the tournament amd turned into a raging lazarus demon controlled by Mother Soul. Robin rallies all the other fighters in the tournament to join together and defeat the demon.
Robin 12. Damian returns to Gotham with the intent of using a vial of Lazarus juice to revive Alfred to assuage his guilt. But he doesn’t, and instead reconnects with his estranged mother.
Robin 13. This was a 2nd print of a crossover issue of the Shadow War event where Deathstroke killed R’as Al Ghul and set off a war between Deathstroke Inc and the League of Shadows. Spoiler; the real villain was former hero Geo-Force posing as Slade who actually killed R’As. I am fairly certain I have almost the entire run of this 16 issue ongoing, but I read the entire thing out of order.
Up next, a bunch of Superman books.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
January is a five week month, so some of the publishers ship next week’s books with this week’s books to save shipping costs. My guy doesn’t bother checking which is which and just puts everything out, so I had a larger than normal week’s worth of books. But that mean next week will be super small.
Anyway, here’s what I got.
Absolute Wonder Woman 4. Steve takes Diana to his friend Etta’s, so she and her sister, a witch, can get Diana the ingredients to rebuild her magic arm and then go defeat the leviathan attacking the city. She does so, but she raises the ire of the US military.
Amazing Spidey 66.
Detective Comics 1093. Having lost one orphan to the serial killer, Team Batman vows to protect the remaining ten possible victims. After the killer shows up and battles Batman, they take a blood sample from him and divulge that he’s really Bruce Wayne. Also, the serial killer might be Bruce’s new booty call, who also might be the daughter of Joe Chill that Thomas Wayne helped hide from her father.
Black Canary 3.
Catwoman 72.
Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon oneshot.
Fantastic Four 28.
GIJoe ARAH 313.
Hellverine 2. Dr Strange sends Daken back to the Arctic circle where Sabretooth killed him to discover the truth about his new powers. While there, he finds some mutants hiding out in X-Force’s old HQ. He tries saving them, but they are consumed by his grave, which has become a gaping, fiery maw directly into hell. Then Strange shows up again and says it’s even worse than he thought; something in Hell is hunting mutants.
Iron Man 4. Tony enlists Scarlet Witch’s help to decipher whether the Iron Monger armor is safe to use. She say’s as long as nobody wears it, it’ll be fine. They hook it up to Tony’s servers to purge the magic software from all of his other armors.
Justice League Unlimited 3. New mysterious supervillain Inferno has set fire to the entire Amazon rainforest, forcing the JL to go put it out. Meanwhile, the Atoms have started a new project to get everybody’s powers back to the correct heroes.
Phoenix 7. Jean and her team take the fight to Thanos, but he uses his warlock stone thing to turn the tables on them. Jean make a desperate ploy to release the Phoenix power to the girl with whom she has a psychic connection. The gambit helps to defeat Thanos, but now they have a new problem.
Power Girl 17. Team Power Girl spends half the issue setting up their new fancy HQ and PG digs her old costume out of storage. I guess sales were slumping and they needed the T&A.
Scarlet Witch 8. Wanda and Amaranth head to a nothern Canadian town where everyone is frozen. Iceworms using golden age hero Jack Frost as a battery are wreaking havoc. They free Jack and defeat the iceworms, and then he gies off on his merry way.
Sonic the Hedgehog:Best of Shadow oneshot.
Star Wars:Battle of Jakku 12. The end of the series.
Action Comics 1079. An issue I missed from a couple weeks ago. All the Phantom Zone villains have escaped and are wreaking havoc across Earth. The heroes of Earth have to re-round them up, but a few have escaped out into the galaxy.
Superman 22. The survivors of Doomsday’s rampage across the galaxy have demanded Earth turn him over to them. When Superman refuses, they attack Earth and release Doomsday. Superman and Doomsday have to team up to fight them. Then the timetrapper, himself a Doomsday from the far future, stops time to have a chat with Lois.
TVA 2. The TVA squad goes to Daimon Hellstrom’s library to research what’s attacking the TVA. And a mysterious entity back at the TVA attacks Mobius, seemingly leaving him for dead.
Ultimate Spider-Man 13. While Ben is running around in the AI picotech suit posing as his father, the real Peter and Harry are trapped in an underground savage land beneath Manhattan being hunted by Kraven.
Kid Venom 4. The end of the miniseries. Barely read it.
Void Rivals 16. Cobra-La attacks some pig guy out in space. Floogli and some other guy get tased by Floogli’s dad for plotting insurrection. And Berfa is walking around in the dark for half the issue, before she finds the giant face of the transformer at the center of the planet.
What If…Mickey and Friends became the FF? Another Disney/Marvel crossover. Eh.
What If…Galactus transformed Rogue? When the Silver Surfer rejects being Galactus’ herald, big G punches him back to Earth. A pre-X-Men teenage Rogue finds the dying Surfer and attempts to resuscitate him, but absorbs all his memories and powers instead. After railing against Galactus’ demands, she reluctantly becomes his new herald.
Wolverine:Revenge 4. It’s been twenty years since Wolverine got his revenge. While doing his yearly visit to a restrained Sabretooth, he’s attacked by the cloned sons of Omega Red. He quickly dispatches them, but the son of Colossus is waiting for his revenge as well.
Wonder Woman 17. The Wonder Girls attack the King of America’s home and defeat his last line of defense, the assorted WW rogues gallery he’s using as bodyguards. He retreats to his final safezone and awaits Wonder Woman’s arrival. The White House….
Uncanny X-Men 9. The X-Men send the kids out with some spending cash to the mall, and they get attacked by the newest version of Sentinels; bloodthirsty cybernetic dogs. One of the new students gets killed.
X-Men:Xavier’s Secret oneshot. A floppie reprint of a bunch of digital first issues. The first story is Jean and Scott having a last night together before she heads out into space. The second story was reporter Sally Floyd uncovering a story she had already uncovered four times about the crew of the spaceship that Xavier killed to make the world turn against him. Turns out he used proto-clones from Sinister’s vats to use as fake victims, so that everyone would hate him instead of Cyclops, who was on trial at the time.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Here’s the final batch of the store closing books. It’s mostly Superman.
Speed Force 1. Six issue mini. I only got the first issue. Kid Flash and the Flash from China get their own mini series. Someone has weaponized the ficticious Spotify in the DCU and is using it to brainwash people. Meh.
Superboy:Man of Tomorrow 1, 2. Now that Connor is un-erased from history(ugh. The last 15 years of DC continuity is such a clusterfuck) he’s ready to be a hero again! The problem is that Metropolis is infested with Super Family. Every time he’s about to do something heroic, Kara or Jon or Kal or someone is already there saving the day. So Connor decides to head out into space and be Superman for planets that don’t have one.
Action 1032, 1034, 1035. Prelude to the Warworld saga. An offshoot branch of Kryptonians who left Krypton eons ago are being used as slaves on Warworld by Mongul. A couple of them escape and come to Earth to plead for Superman’s help. A power source they were using falls into the ocean and is retrieved by the Atlanteans. Which sets off a tense standoff between Aquaman and the US Govt. Superman steps in a takes away the power source from both sides, earning their ire. In the end, Kal heads off into space to free the slaves, leaving Jon to be Earth’s Superman.
Action 1039, 1042. Part of the yearlong Warworld Saga. Kal ends up fighting in gladiatorial combat arenas while attempting to overthrow Mongul on Warworld. It was basically Planet Hulk, but with Superman.
Action 1048. Kal returned from Warworld with two 8-10 year old twins that Lois and he end up adopting. So now there’s even more Super Family. Orion and some other New Gods show up because one of the kids is heir to some lineage and they’re they to retrieve the kid. Clark says nope.
Action 1053, 1054, 1056. Someone is manipulating John Corben aka Metallo into fighting Superman with an army of innocent people who have been ‘Metallo-ized’ because he thinks Kal is holding his sister hostage. The real culprit turns out to be Hank Henshaw, aka Cyborg Superman. Metallo and Superman team up to stop his plan.
Action 1057-1060. A humans only movement called Blue Skies is trying to smear Superman’s reputation by making him look bad in the news, and also offering an alternative solution with humans powered up to Superman levels acting as the new heroes of Metropolis. The villain behind Blue Skies turns out to be an alternate universe’s daughter of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul that Batman, Superman, and the Authority faced off against in an obscure oneshot. She’s trying to use one of Kal’s new kids as a way to bring her entire world’s armies into the main DCU to take over. This story arc ended in an annual.
Action 1063. Final part of an arc where Bizarro has turned everyone on Earth into Bizarros, and the only person left who can help Kal return everything to normal is the Joker, who was turned into the only sane person left on Earth.
Action 1064-1066. Part of a big crossover event with all the other Superbooks called ‘House of Brainiac’. Brainiac is back with another evil plan and he’s using Czarnians from a bottled city he had kept as his thug army. Superman needs Lobo’s help to stop the Czarnians and Brainiac.
Action 1067. First part of a story set early in Superman’s career where an interstellar armada shows up on Earth and demands Kal fight in their tournament or they’ll blow up Earth.
And that caught me up to where I started buying it again with the All in stuff a few months ago.
Action Annual 2021. I already had this one.
Action Annual 2022. An origin story for the new Mongul, and a flashback from when Clark was a kid dealing with a school bully.
Action Annual 2023. The conclusion of the Al Ghul invasion story arc above.
Superman 3, 5. Now that Lex is “good” and helping Kal, new villains have emerged and are trying to amp up Superman’s villains with kryptonite to get back at Lex(?). This issue has Silver Banshee getting amped up powers. But she’s dating Jimmy Olsen now. I hope to find more of this series, because the few issues I’ve read from Josh Williamson have been pretty good.
Adventures of Superman:Jon Kent 4-6. The last half of a mini series. Jon is trapped in the Injustice Universe and he’s trying to stop his ‘father’ and the evil Justice League. Pretty good contrast of what makes Superman a hero vs whatever the video game decided he should be.
When Superman is written well…damn, chef’s kiss. His eternal optimism and moral code on full display in every issue. Even eighty years later, it’s so good to see every month.
It makes me keep thinking about how Zack Snyder missed the fucking mark so hard, and how much I’m looking forward to James Gunn’s version.
Up next, back to the Fantastic Four finally! When I started reading all the new back issues in reverse order, I had twelve long boxes to get thru. It is now up to 21 long boxes, although all of them are only 80-90% full because I left room in each of them. Not counting the ‘D-G’ box I’m on, I still have seven to get thru, but two and half of those are Batman stuff, and I read a lot of that already. Onward!

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Fantastic Four! I read the first half of Dan Slott’s run way back in April of 2022. I am finishing it up in January of 2025.
FF 30. A King in Black tie in. Ben and Johnny are two of the heroes who got turned into evil Knull-ified symbiotes during the event. Val also gets turned. While they are evil, they say mean things to Reed and Sue and Franklin that linger after they get returned to normal.
FF 31. Reed and Ben use the Forever Gate to explore a brand new universe as a way to hang out. While they’re in there, they have to re-confront a future they saw where they’re trying to kill each other. Bentley might be under the control of his “father” the Wizard. And Franklin goes to therapy about the loss of his powers.
FF 32-35. The Bride of Doom! Lyja tries impersonating Johnny’s new soulmate Skye at a Latverian embassy function. Then Johnny Storm, Skye, Lyja, and Victorious from Latveria team up to protect the embassy from Ultimatum terrorists. After the battle Skye is upset about Johnny and Lyja’s complicated past and leaves, so Johnny does the incredibly stupid thing and hooks up with Victorious. Then Doom calls and proposes to Victorious. Doom asks Reed to be his best man, and the FF are invited to the wedding. Doom ascertains thru soy cameras that Reed and Sue legitimately believe Doom can reform and be good. Once Doom sees this, he plans on living up to their expectations and turn good permanently. Then, at the wedding, right before she says her vows, Victorius confesses that she and Johnny had a one night stand, and Doom goes full on supervillain, blaming the FF for his embarrassment. He ends up overdosing Johnny with cosmic energy so that he can no longer power down and is permanently flamed on. Issue 35 was a giant sized 60th anniversary issue.
FF 36. Reed is trying to find a cure for Johnny’s new problem. Sky decides to return to Spyre after Johnny’s infidelity.
FF 37. While celebrating Halloween for first time, Ben and the kids are attacked by people who run the Kree casino where they were being used as gladiators. Reed receives a message from his departed father revealing he has a sister.
FF 38-39. The Wizard returns and sues for custody of Bentley. The FF bring in their attorney Jennifer Walters to defend them as his legal guardians.
FF:Reckoning War Alpha oneshot + Trial of the Watcher oneshot + FF 40-45. The Reckoning War is something Slott teased way back in his She-Hulk series almost twenty years ago. I feel like he pitched this to be a big summer crossover event and it got downsized to an FF only event. Way back at the beginning of time, before the Watchers were Watchers, they were a benevolent race who was keen on sharing their advanced tech with all the other races. But the first race they equipped, the Prosilicons, immediately used the tech as weaponry to wage war and conquer the rest of the universe. The ensuing war wiped out 9/10ths of the known universe and the Watchers wiped out the Prosilicons, trapping them in the barrens, what was left of the destruction at the edge of the universe. This is the secret shame that caused the Watchers to take their vow of non-interference. But now the Prosilicons are back, calling themselves The Reckoning, and using the Watcher tech to arm violent races like the Badoon to attack the rest of the universe again. They attack Earth, and blow up the moon! While the rest of Earth’s heroes are fighting the invasion, the FF, along with OG Nick Fury and the newly resurrected Uatu head to the homeworld of the Watchers to stop the Reckoning from stealing the three Nexus of realities to rewrite the universe. The future Reed and Ben saw where they are fighting each other comes to pass when Reed orders the kids back on Earth to destroy the Forever Gate before the Reckoning can get to it, and Ben thinks Alicia and his family were killed in the detonation. Doom and Cormorant show up to help defend against the Reckoning. Also, all the former heralds of Galactus are compelled to converge on Asgard where Galactus’ corpse is to reignite him. He merges with the Destroyer armor. In the end, the Reckoning are defeated, and Uatu is left as the final Watcher with infinite powers and he restores the 90% of the universe that was previously destroyed. Galactus and Silver Surfer team up to go explore all this new space. It was a suitably epic finale to Slott’s run.
FF 46. In Slott’s final issue on the series, Reed finds his long lost half-sister, a marine biologist, and they hang out. And the Spyre finds a cure for Johnny’s predicament and he gets restored to normal.
FF 46-48. David Prepose came on for the final two issues, which were AXE:Judgement Day tie-ins. While the Celestial is judging humanity, Oubliette Midas attacks the Baxter Building and Sue is the only one there to defend it.
Up next, a couple FF minis and oneshots, and then I start Ryan North’s current FF ongoing, which is up to issue 28 at this point.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
As promised, an FF oneshot, and a couple minis.
FF Anniversary Tribute. A bunch of different artists, each one doing a page, recreate the first issue of FF, and also the annual where Reed and Sue get married. I think they’ve done this before with Captain America or the Avengers. Kind of a cool concept, but not sure if its $7 cool.
Fantastic Four:Life Story 1-6. The FF aging in real time, with each issue taking a decade’s worth of time. In the first issue, during their fateful space mission, Reed psionically attracts the attention of Galactus. They spend the next several decades attempting to prepare for his arrival. Along the way, Johnny dies stopping a nuclear holocaust, Sue leaves Reed to be with Namor, and Victor and the Mad Thinker try taking over the world.
New Fantastic Four 1-5. Peter David tells a “retro” story set not long after the original story arc. Asmodeus the demon is possessing people in Las Vegas and Spidey, Logan, Ghost Rider, and Hulk have to stop him with the help of the original FF. There is an awkward Reed/Sue sex scene in one of the issues. I want to bleach my eyes.
NOW…Ryan North’s current ongoing. I absolutely loved North’s Squirrel Girl series. I hope my expectations for this book aren’t unrealistically high. North is also doing this year’s big Dr Doom event series.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
North’s FF run did NOT let me down. In fact, of all the Marvel ongoings I’m keeping current on, it might be my favorite one right now. That might be a post for a different topic. But here’s the rundown on the first 28 issues, which catches me up on the series. Most issues were one off adventures or two parters at the most. North was doing a lot of mix and matching with characters, sending two of the Four(or sometimes having one of them team up with Alicia Masters, who North is giving much more story time to) on adventures. Here we go!
FF 1. Ben and Alicia are on a road trip to AZ after something happened that estranged them from the team and caused something to happen to their kids. They drive thru a small PA town that keeps reliving the same day in 1947 over and over and over. They need to figure out whats causing the time loop to save the town.
2. Reed and Sue are looking for Ben and Alicia. They come across a town that’s full of Doombots that think they are citizens of the town, all tasked with protecting an old lady that was kind to Victor once. She’s long since passed on, but the Doombots are still living the lives. Reed reprograms them to delete their secondary objective(“Kill Reed Richards!”) but otherwise they leave the town alone.
3. Johnny is working in the back room of a dept store, and takes up the cause of the workers being exploited by their dick boss.
4. The team is reunited in AZ at Aunt Petunia’s place, and we discover why the Four left NYC, and why Ben and Alicia are upset with Reed. During an attack from the Negative Zone, Reed was forced to shunt the Baxter Building and the surrounding city block into a pocket dimension. But the catch is, the building and its occupants won’t return for exactly one year. No time will have passed for them, but for the rest of the city, their loved ones, including Nikki, Jo, Val, and Franklin, are gone. And since it left a huge gaping crater where the Baxter Building used to be, the FF are no longer welcome in NYC and their assets have been frozen. The team eventually reconciles at the end of the issue, when Ben realizes Reed is just as broken up about losing his kids. They all decide to travel to AZ together.
5-6. While traveling to AZ, the team is attacked by Nicholas Scratch and the Salem Seven. Scratch magic whammies the team by shunting their DNA into a different dimension so that they can’t process anything they eat or drink in this dimension. Reed figures out how to reverse the process, but in doing so they inadvertantly bring back microbes from the alternate dimension which threaten to take over all the bacteria on earth, making it impossible for anything to survive here. They stop the bacteria by cutting off its supply of sunlight for three days straight by having Sue block out the sun. Which brings them to the attention of Maria Hill and the CIA.
7. The 700th Legacy issue. Dr. Doom arrives in AZ demanding Reed bring back his goddaughter Val. He extensively uses his time machine to try and go back and rewrite history to save Val before he realizes he can’t and leaves. Classic Doom.
8-9. An alien trapped under the town in AZ where the Fournare living is using mind control to make people forget their friends and family and using them as slaves in its underground palace. Eventually it mind controls Reed and Ben, so Sue and Johnny have to get clever in saving them and the town.
10. Told from the perspective of aliens traveling in a world ship across the span of centuries; their ship was caught in a temporal flux and the FF had to figure out how to restart their engines to free them.
11. Obscure FF villain Miracle Man has hypnotized everyone in the house, and Ben and his new puppy figure out how to see thru the illusions and defeat him.
12-13. The FF get zapped into a different dimension where everyone are dinosaurs, and they fight the Dinosaur Avengers(conversely, the dino-FF is back in the 616 fighting the regular Avengers. Eventually, Reed figures out how to communicate with the dinos to get back to their universe, but Dr. Doom has teamed up with his T-Rex counterpart to take over both universes. Until Ben and his pachysaurus counterpart point out that both Dooms are gonna betray each other. Which they do.
14-15. The Baxter Building is set to return, but people are building a massive antenna array in the crater. The FF confront a tech mogul using a predictive AI to make himself billions of dollars. When someone hacks the AI, Reed and Johnny destroy the servers. But they don’t realize it was the AI that had become sentient. The AI, called Metamind then sees the FF as a threat and holds the Baxter building hostage. Reed offers to help the AI, but the tech mogul begins erasing its programming, which causes a cascade failure and it “dies” before Reed can save it. Heartbreaking. But the Baxter Building and its occupants are back and everyone is reunited.
16. The kids start at their new school in AZ, and decide to impress their new science teacher by creating a universal solvent. Which then starts eating thru the flasks, and the floor, and the earth’s crust…then they decide to shoot it into the sun and realize that won’t work either. They eventually fix things, but since they can’t present what they did, they get Fs in the class.
17. At an archeology dig, the team finds the remains of Susan from 10,000 years ago when humans were crossing the bering strait into the Americas for the first time. She and Reed have to solve the mystery of her death and fight a time traveling Rama-Tut.
18. Nicholas Scratch is back and he’s secretly shooting thousands of invisible asteroids at the Earth. Franklin has subconciously supressed his omega level powers, except for once a year when he wakes up in the night and solves any potential upcoming disasters, which he does by slightly moving the asteroids out of earth’s path.
19. Gumshoe Alicia Masters is in a noirish universe, having been hired by femme fatale Susan Storm to find her missing boyfriend Reed Richards. Turns out Paste Pot Pete found a cosmic cube and was trying to rewrite reality based on an old movie he saw, but Alicia finds the cube and reverts everything.
20. Johnny and Ben are trying to pull their weight providing for the family, and get jobs at the local grocery store where they get into a competition for employee of the month.
21-22. Blood Hunt tie-ins. Reed and Alicia are in NYC visiting the MOMA when vampires attack and they work together to save as many people as possible in the museum, and then in Madison Square Garden. The aftermath of Blood Hunt where Doom becomes the new Sorcerer Supreme becomes a lingering subplot for the next several issues.
23-24. When several OMG particles begin raining down on Earth, the FF shrinks down to sub-micro size to discover an alien race used the power of their sun to launch themselves into space billions of years ago. The last surviving alien wants to use Reed’s hadron collider to relaunch himself into space before all the nukes his species sent after him arrive to blow up earth. Reed ends up trapped on the ship with the alien as they relaunch into soace with no destination, experiencing the entirety of all space-time in the matter of a few hours, until Franklin at the end of time(being the eventual successor of Galactus into the next iteration of the universe) plucks his dad out ands places him back in the present.
25. While trying to breach the dome Doom has placed around Latveria, the FF are shunted onto an alien world. While trying to figure out how to get back to Earth, the team befriends the alien race on the planet and Johnny falls in love with one of them. Then Reed realizes that they are on an Earth that never collided with Theia because something Doom did rewrote history billions of years ago. Furthermore, the team figures out if they “fix” the timeline it will erase the trillions of lives that have evolved, including Johnny’s new girlfriend. The moral dilemma ensues until Reed figures out some ‘quantum probability’ hooey that allows for both timelines to exist, but they can never EVER ineract with each other, so Johnny and Kkkkkkk have to break up. Very sad.
26. While everyone else is in NYC for Halloween, Reed and Johnny get into shenanigans by accidentally unleashing a bunch of ghosts from the basement, and then stealing a perpetually bloodflowing skull to block the fissure to the nether realm they created.
27. Nikki keeps using her skrull shapeshifting to pose as their parents whenever the kids get in trouble at school. She gets grounded, but then Mole Man attacks the school looking for Val and Franklin and Nikki embraces her skrulliness to defeat him.
28. One World Under Doom tie-in. Sue and Reed enlist the aid of Dane Whitman to see if his ebony sword can breach Doom’s Latverian shield. He sends them back to WW I to find a magic swird that will do the trick, but the entire thing was a ruse by Doom to have them find the one weapon that could defeat him so he could destroy it. When they get back to the present, Doom has taken over the world! Just in time for the new Doom event.
Annual 1. Part of the Contest of Chaos crossover. Johnny faces off against Ghost Rider. I have now read all the chapters(out of order) except the Avengers Annual, which is also the finale of the story.
Giant Size FF 1. One of several 50th anniversay oneshots from last year. In this one Stingray and Reed inadvertently let an ancient Atlantean king out of his prison. The other three, go ask Namor for advice and then go fight the Atlantean, but then they realize he was imprisoned for wanting to unite the Atlanteans and Lemurians, and since the underwater kingdoms are in complete disarray, maybe just let him go do his thing. Also had a reprint of FF 33 from back in the 60s.
FF Trick-or-read oneshot. This was just a reprint of issue 13 above where Dr Doom and T-Rex Dr Doom team up.
This run has been exceptional. Ryan North is using tons of legitimate science concepts and taking them to ludicrous Fantastic Four levels of entertainment. And he’s giving “secondary” characters like Alicia and the kids almost equal billing. Loving it.
Up next, (after this week’s books of course) a bunch of FCBD books from the past several years, which I will be skipping. So up next is a bunch of Firefly. The last time I read Firefly, I was underwhelmed. Hopefully these issues are better.
FF 1. Ben and Alicia are on a road trip to AZ after something happened that estranged them from the team and caused something to happen to their kids. They drive thru a small PA town that keeps reliving the same day in 1947 over and over and over. They need to figure out whats causing the time loop to save the town.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Last week’s books. Because it was the fifth week of the month, ‘twas a tiny offering. And the DCs didn’t even show up.
West Coast Avengers 3.
Deadpool 10. Wade is back. That didn’t take long.
Hellhunters 2. Nick Fury and his small team run into a certain hairy Canadian using spike knuckled trench knives and they team up to find the Nazi demons.
Marvel Free Preview 41. April’s solicits.
Moon Knight:Fist of Khonshu 4. While moping in the tunnels under NYC about getting the Midnight Mission killed, MK is attacked by Vermin. This gets him all riled up and he goes to the house of the corrupt cop that’s been hounding him and demands to speak to her boss, the new drug dealer guy. Moon Knight challenges him to a cage fight.
Psylocke 3. Kwannon finds an injured Greycrow repairing his missing arm. Clues left point to Shinobi, but when they go confront him, he says he recognizes the clues as a childhood friend of his that he thought was dead. A new villain now called The Taxonomist.
Sabretooth:Dead Don’t Talk 2. Creed, under his new guise as Mad Dog is clearing out the rival gangs in 18th century New York for his boss Fisk. The rival gamgs organizes and hire a K’un L’un badass chick called Dragonfire to take him out.
Spider-Boy 15. The tournament comes down DD and Bailey vs Bullseye and Spider-Girl. When Bailey’s premonition sense alerts him that Bullseye is going to betray Spider-Girl, he tries to warn her. Then during the final fight, the fighters switch opponents, and Bullseye gets the upper hand on Spider-Boy, so DD freaks out and calls forfeit. The bad guys win! Wait, what?
Star Wars:A New Legacy oneshot. Marvel has been publishing new SW books for TEN YEARS. WHAT? That can’t be right. Surely it has only been a…oh fuck I’m old.
Star Wars:Ewoks 4.
Storm:Lifedream oneshot. A Marvel Voices special celebrating Storm’s 50th anniversary. And they did it in the most boring way possible with a yawn inducing story about some space archivists looking at the high points of Ororo’s life. Plus a couple of interviews with people who are inspired by Storm.
What If….Galactus transformed Spider-Gwen? The final of five oneshots. Gwen offers to become G’s new herald. Then goes to a planet where there is dragons and dungeons, and is inspired to help them get ready to fight Galactus when he arrives. The writer didn’t understand the assignment, they just wanted to write D&D fan fiction with Spider-Gwen. Dumb.
X-Men 10. The O.N.E. shows up to arrest Scott’s team after the Greymalkin raid. While Scott talks to their boss, he has a special black ops team of Hellions go around decimating O.N.E. bases all over the country. Then he dares the guy to shoot him, and see what happens when his wife, who is out in space right now, comes back and finds out they shot him. The guy reluctantly leaves. Scott’s a badass.
Up next, a couple smaller F minis and then, quite frankly, a lot more Firefly books than I thought there were. It’s like 40 issues of Firefly. I might get disheartened slogging thru these given how cruddy the last Firefly read was. Wish me luck.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
This week’s books.
Absolute Superman 4. The terrorist organization Omega Men is trying to recruit Lois Lane and make her see how evil the Lazarus Corp is. Lois is trying to find Superman, who doesn’t want to be found. One of Lazarus’ Peacemakers goes nuts and kills a bunch of civilians.
Avengers 23.
Batgirl 4.
Batman 157. Zdarsky’s run mercifully ends. My (least) favorite part was the twist where Jim Gordon admits to Batman that Tetch’s mind control had been broken during the fight with the mayor, and he was completely in control when he shot him. And Batman is all ‘Eh. Shit happens Jim. Try and be better in the future old chum.’ WHAT THE FUCK. Commissioner Gordon admits he murdered the Mayor and Batman just lets it slide. Fuck. You. Chip Zdarsky.
Batman:Off-World 6.
Birds of Prey 18.
Namor 7. After six issues of Namor clamoring on about not wanting to be king again, he decides he DOES want to be king again and fights the other seven kings and their entire armies all by himself.
Phoenix 8. In a wild divergent from every other Jean Grey/Phoenix story from the last fifty years, Jean navel gazes about coming to terms with being one with the Phoenix force.
Power Man:Timeless 1. The old man Cage from last year’s Timeless oneshot is stuck in this universe and is fighting some new big super powerful bad guy that wants to destroy some brand new made up power source thats existed all this time, but nobody in the universe has ever thought about exploiting before.
Scarlet Witch 9. Black Cat breaks into Wanda’s place to steal some ancient cursed artifact, and sets off a bunch of bad mojo that Wanda and her new apprentice have to stop. Felicia is acting stupidly out of character in this scenario. Wanda is like ‘Don’t touch anything in here, it’s like the magic equivalent of nuclear bombs.’ and Felicia is like ‘lol wevs. I like to steal stuff! What’s this do? [breaks stuff] lol oopsies!’ Next issue is the last one.
Silverhawks 1. Based on the Toyline from the 80s. I had a free extra issue and it had a cool cover.
Sonic 76.
Spectacular Spider-Men 12. The Electros have teamed up to fight the Spiders. The Lizard is not happy they kidnapped his son.
Spirits of Vengeance 6. The Ghost Riders figure out who the Spirit of Violence who’s trying to kill them is. It’s Danny’s sister Barbara. Cliffhanger ending! To be continued in next month’s Spirits of Violence series.
Star Wars:Legacy of Vader oneshot.
Superman:Lex Luthor Special. Lex has had amnesia for awhile, and has been one of Superman’s biggest allies during that time. But he’s starting to remember…
Ultimates 9. Luke Cage has been incarcerated for the last twenty years. When Iron Lad gave him a Stark Box to trigger his powers, he elected to stay incarcerated so he could organize prison breaks and free all the unjustly imprisoned convicts. Another decent issue.
Wolverine 6. Laura shows up to help Logan solve the mystery of the admantium possessed villains. They secret villain behind the scenes reveals himself. It’s Romulus. Ugh. This dopey fuck again?

I'm hearing more & more about North on FF. I might have to figure out an economical way to read these....
