migrating web hosts, will be some downtime

Post by vynsane »

i'm moving web hosts, and the billing date of the old host is tomorrow. hopefully i get another day to get this taken care of, because it's been going slow today. in preparation, i updated the phpbb software to the latest version, so there will be some slight UI differences. i'll be disabling the board once i hear back from the new host about the problem i'm having connecting to the server via FTP to do the transfer of the site files.

Saw this after the fact, after being interrupted by notices of the migration.

The new UI seems much cleaner to me, even if the changes are mostly subtle.

But it's more fun to bitch, so thanks for fucking things up, you moldy twat gopher-blower.

yeah, i meant to get the migration done during the notice period yesterday, but had problems connecting to the new host via FTP. i figured i'd use the downtime yesterday to upgrade the board and then get the migration done today. i've connected to the new server successfully now, so i'm transferring the files over. i will close the board here again, take a new backup of the database, and install it on the new host sometime today.

i've already migrated baconhelmet.com over to the new server, so if this board is down at http://asylum.vynsane.com or http://vynsane.com/forum, you can try http://baconhelmet.com/forum.

there was a little hiccup with cached files causing issues when i tried to post a reply - the reply would get saved, but i would get an error message, then get logged out. looks like that's cleared up now.

looks like everything is ship-shape in terms of the forum. had a little issue with the login form after transferring over to asylum.vynsane.com but that was because i had reverted the way the cookie is being set. switched that back to the way it was and we're good.

I will say I switched to baconhelmet, but it logged me out after a day and then told me the "form is invalid" whenever I tried to log back in. Not sure if this is a serious issue or not. Switching back to vynsane worked, though.

when i updated the DNS for vynsane.com and added the asylum.vynsane.com subdomain to the new host, that was the behavior i experienced attempting to log in and post using the sudomain. changing the cookie settings (the cookie domain explicitly set to '.vynsane.com') made asylum.vynsane.com work correctly, but it looks like any other URL format will end up with the 'form is invalid' error. i think we'll have to live with it and just use asylum.vynsane.com.

The only issue I'm having is I'm not staying logged in, even when I click Remember Me.

yeah, switch to https://asylum.vynsane.com - that's been the "main" address for a while now anyway. there must have been some glitch/feature of the previous version that allowed cookies to work at that address even though the cookie domain was set to '.vynsane.com' but that's not working on the new version or new webhost (it could be that requests were being redirected to 'www.vynsane.com/forum' so the '.vynsane.com' was still effective or something).
