Favorties of 2008

Like last year, it's time to look back at the year inmovies.
What were your favorites and least favorites?

The Best/My Favorites in (almost) no particular order:

The Dark Knight - Easily my favorite movie of the year.

Wall-E - Right behind TDK as my #2 of the year.

Iron Man - Color me surprised. Favreau and Downey Jr. made Marvel's ultimate douchebag fun.

Cloverfield - A great attempt to make something old (a monster movie) new again.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Who knew that assclown from the worst sitcom on tv could be funny?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Fuck the naysayers. Indy will always be good...even with Lebeouf.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Took what was great about the first and expanded on it.

Step Brothers - Ferrell and Reilly acting like giant man-children? Awesome.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe - Fuck the naysayers #2. You didn't need 9 years of convoluted backstory to enjoy it as a good mystery/thriller with a hint of paranormal.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - Kevin Smith tries again to get away from his Askewniverse and succeeds with a funny and sometimes touching (in more ways than one) comedy.

The Rest:

Hancock - The first half or so is really great. The second half not-so much. Still enoyable.

The Incredible Hulk - The reboot isn't better than the '02 outing, but at least they got some good action in there.

Jumper - Deviates from the original novel quite a bit, but it was a fun popcorn flick.

My Blueberry Nights - Norah Jones does a nice job in her first movie role. Throw in some Natalie Portman and I'm so there.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - I'm liking the movie more as the show grows on me. Ahsoka still sucks ass.

Role Models - Had the potential to be better, but is still very funny.

Semi-Pro - I loves me some Will Ferrell. Good but not one of his best.

Tropic Thunder - Pretty overrated (especially Tom Cruise's role) but totally worth seeing just for Robert Downey Jr.

The Worst:

Righteous Kill - You'd think a movie with DeNiro and Pacino would be good. Right? Wrong.

Speed Racer - I never thought a sugar coated acid trip could be so dull.

The Strangers - Boring. Predictable. Terrible. Naturally, they're working on a sequel.

W. - I expected a more scathing look at the worst president in American history. It ended up too straight forward and dull.

I saw:
*The Dark Knight - fucking great, of course.
*Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - I agree with Diabolical. It was at least as good as the old ones.
*Iron Man - more fun than I thought it would be.
*WALL-E - more Pixar awesomeness, one of their best, I'd say.
*21 - a fine way to waste some time. I didn't go out of my way to see it and I wouldn't really suggest the same for anyone else.
*Forgetting Sarah Marshall - not as funny as I hoped it would be, but the supporting actors were all hysterical. (And I like How I Met Your Mother . . .)
*Baby Mama - starts slow but gets really funny.
*Tropic Thunder - probably the funniest movie of the year. Good stuff all around.
*Star Wars: The Clone Wars - of course not as good as the other six, but not as bad as people said it was. Still, the show is better than the movie (usually). It was a pretty good introduction to the series, and it was nice to see on the big screen, but honestly nothing too great.

Still want to see:
*Be Kind Rewind
*Step Brothers
*Hamlet 2
*Religulous
*Zack and Miri Make a Porno
*Role Models
*Hellboy 2

The best would be Speed Racer, The Dark Knight, and Kung Fu Panda.

Still have to see:
Indy
Wall-E
Iron Man
Zack & Miri
Tropic Thunder
Hamlet 2
Hellboy II
Stepbrothers
Hancock
W

And I'll probably eventually see:
Incredible Hulk
Punisher War Zone
The Clone Wars

It might be interesting, too, to catch Religulous and the one Ben Stein did that's like the polar opposite back-to-back.

I also suspect Valkyrie will rank way up there. Tom Cruise may be a fucking loon, but he's still a damned good actor. Everything Bryan Singer touches is gold. And the Hitler bomb plot? That should be a real winner.

Here's a list of pretty much everything I've seen this year:

The Best:
The Dark Knight - Not only is it the best movie of the year, but it's easily one of my all-time favorite movies already.
Iron Man - One of the best Marvel movies.
Wall-E - It was a damn good movie, but people are going a little bit too crazy over it. I still think "The Incredibles" is the best Pixar movie.
Tropic Thunder - Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise owned this movie.
Pineapple Express - James Franco was surprisingly hilarious, but we already knew that from "Spider-Man 3".

The Pretty Good:
Prince Caspian
Hellboy II
Wanted
Step Brothers
The Incredible Hulk
Quantum of Solace
Kung Fu Panda
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Zack and Miri Make A Porno
Role Models

The Okay:
Hancock
Get Smart
Speed Racer
Cloverfield
W.
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Semi-Pro
Saw V

The Worst:
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - While the TV show is much better, this was just "meh".
You Don't Mess With The Zohan - I'd rather watch an abortion being performed than watch this piece of shit again.

Speed Racer first

Hulk and Iron Man tied for second.

JCVD is the only thing I can think of that I still MUST see :mabs: :ducks:

Didn't like Tropic Thunder really at all, despite all the praise I didn't "get" it, same thing happened with Napoleon Dynamite and me

Didn't see anything else that I recall...

I think the only other movie I'll be checking out this year is "The Spirit", but I don't know how good that'll be. The rest of the stuff I'm interested in seeing (like "Slumdog Millionaire", "Gran Torino", "Eagle Eye", maybe "The Day the Earth Stood Still") I'll be waiting to see on DVD.

Finally saw Pineapple Express last night and thought it was pretty good. James Franco was hilarious.
There were a lot of great little oddball things in the dialogue that really had me laughing.

"I'm gonna become a civil engineer. I'm gonna design septic tanks for playgrounds. Little kids can take shits!"

"It's like killing a unicorn... with, like, a bomb."

Wall-E is definitely way, way up there. It's in that upper echelon of Pixar flicks with The Incredibles and Toy Story 2.

I thought the fight scene with Franco, Red and Rogan was fuckin Hilarious. "Time Out....Time in"

the ash tray flinging almost made me wet my pants
