Cloverfield

Cloverfield

Post by Diabolical »

Looking back at the thread elsewhere, and seeing certain dicks posted in that thread (especially when they compare the monster to the Rancor), I decided to start a Cloverfield thread here.

Who saw it and what'd you think?

I've watched it twice since Tuesday (three times total) and I still really like it. The first 20 minutes are still fairly dull, but once the shit hits the fan, the rest is pretty fun.

Yes, the hand held camera is a little frustrating at times, but I think it works in lending to the "realistic" feel to the movie.

I love the fact that almost no questions are answered - what is it? Where did it come from? What happened to ____________? Why did __________ happen?
Yeah, I want to know the answers also, but if we never get 'em, oh well.

And the whole "Blair Witch + Godzilla = Cloverfield" is just plain retarded. Cloverfield is actually good, where the other two were total pieces of shit.

The DVD doesn't really answer too many story questions, but does a great job at showing how the movie was made. There were so many effects shots that had so many more effects than you realize (the Brooklyn Bridge scene is a great example). The one big revelation was that the monster was a terrified infant, which is why it rampages around screaming, rather than try to escape back into the ocean (if that is indeed where it comes from, which they don't say).

Here is what I had to write about it on the other site.

The beginning party scenes were a nice introduction to our characters. The dude who was filming everything (Hud) brought some great comic relief throughout the movie. But as soon as the Statue of Liberty's head flew into the street, the ride started. The movie teased us with glimpses of the monster, but completely made us forget about the big guy during the subway scene. Those little parasites that came from the monster were creepy as hell. But the full view that we got of the monster (which I would say looked most like a dinosaur) was impressive. Its reign of destruction across New York, from what was seen of it, was terrifying. As for the characters, I kept hoping that they would make it. By the time they got in the helicopter, I was thinking "they made it this far, just hang in there a little longer". You want them to survive because it's not like any of them are Joe Everyman who's supposed to save the day. These are regular people who are just trying to survive. The ending, while not a bad one, was still a downer. You come out of the movie feeling a bit depressed, but satisfied anyway. This was one of the most suspenseful movies I've ever seen. It was a fun ride, much better than I had anticipated. It's a short movie, which suits it. If it were a regular monster movie like "Godzilla", it would have added more fluff. There are some mysteries in the movie. We never find out how the monster came to be, but as it's the point of view of people trying to survive, it isn't really necessary. The major mystery is why they called it "Cloverfield". Nowhere in the movie is it spoken, but I took it to mean a military codename for the situation. That was my best guess. It's unfair to compare this movie to "The Blair Witch Project", as originally labeled (which I myself am guilty of). The only similar thing between them is the style of filming with a handheld camera. Other than that, "Blair Witch" was a pile of garbage and this one is anything but. While I'm at it, I'll also say this one was better than the American "Godzilla" (but what movie isn't?). I think this was a unique take on the traditional monster movie, and I was very impressed.

I still feel the same way about it, but I'm thinking another viewing in the future is imminent. I might rent it to see it again in the next few weeks.

I don't know if anyone knows this, but in the FINAL scene of the movie, when the video reverts back to them at Coney Island for the last time and she says "Today was a good day." when he has the camera pointed at the Amusement park and the ocean behind it, you can see something fall out of the sky and splash in the water. It's on the right side of the screen, and is so small on a TV screen you can't see it unless you know it's there. It's a little black speck that comes out of the clouds and then seems to decelerate as it gets closer to the water, then splashes in. Right after it lands is when he turns the camera back towards the two of them.

Oh and "Cloverfield" is the name of the street in Santa Monica where JJ Abram's production offices are. He just likes the name and attached it to the project so as not to give away the Monster Movie aspect of it, but as time went on, they couldn't come up with a better name (crap like "Leviathan" and "Behemoth" and "Parasite" was bandied about by the Studio) so they just stuck with the mysterious sounding Cloverfield.

Ha ha! Triple Post! Grimlock is a Cocksuckercon!!

Everyone dismisses the beginning of the film, but there is SO much going on there. Besides the character development, if you pay attention to the background, there is this whole backstory about how this company's satellite fell into the water, and this other company's boat is dredging for the satellite wreckage and how their boat sank under mysterious circumstances and shit ( presumably because the dredging disturbed the monsters nest or something).

For me the best part of the movie is when they are in the tunnel and you see the little creepy things chasing them on the night vision lens. I about fucking peed myself that shit is so scary.

Ah, mother fucker! I just posted here and it didn't show up!

Basically, I missed the thing hitting the water in theaters, but saw it on DVD. And if you followed the viral stuff, that is supposed to be said satellite hitting the eater, which sounds like pure crap.

Where is all this? I don't remember seeing anything about it, with the exception of the news report of the tanker being attacked when the monster first emerges.

Like I mentioned elsewhere, I enjoyed this movie, but I felt a little empty afterwards.

I'm very much looking forward to the sequel... to you know, see what happens?
"Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."
