Frank Miller

Post by jjreason »

Hi everyone. I saw an opportunity to yak about my "real" hobby, so here goes. I love comics. Synonimous and synchronous with loving comics would be loving Frank Miller's work in the medium. Go buy and read anything you can find with his name on it right now (Good examples might include BatMan: the Dark Knight, Sin City, 300, and the book that introduced me to FM's work: Daredevil - all of which can be found in inexpensive, single volume graphic novel paperbacks).

I recommend buying his stories in graphic novel format - I know there's some merit in first print books, but these all read better in a cohesive unit. You don't have to worry about spilling on them either. Graphic novels are the tool that will keep this dying hobby from going completely under.

Frank Miller, my most favoritistest comic creator ever. Check him out.

I loved Sin City. I only got the first two or three limited series. I actually bought and read the second one with Dwight, before going back and reading the first with Marv. After that my interest in comics across the board dwindled. I still flip thru the TPBs at Brentano's and Barnes&Noble.

I liked the first DK Returns series, but this latest one is a little too wierd for me. Plus, I don't like how his artistic style has degenerated into sludge. It looks like he draws with his knuckle dipped in ink.

Ahhhhh...Daredevil. When I worked in a comic shop, people would come in and sell their comics by the comic long box. The owner wasn't interested, so I'd make the guys offers like $40 for the whole box. This one guy had a run of old Daredevil including the entire Born Again run. I got it for super cheap (considering there were over 300 issues in the box). From the trailer, it looks like the new movie is sort of based on Frank's Daredevil run (Electra, Bullseye, KingPin, etc).

And don't forget his screenwriting career! Robocop 2 anyone? Directed by Irvin Kershner!

Where were we? Frank Miller.

You ever read what you wrote a year ago and think "Damn, I was clever back then. Why can't I be clever like that now?"

300. Pretty good series. Any one else check that out? It also came out in a "director's cut" hardcover, with majorly expanded art - way wider pages. I flipped through it, and was almost ready to part with the 80 or so bucks they wanted. Beautiful. Some books really work well in the deluxe hardcover format.

Just read Dark Knight again on the plane to Winnipeg. Unreal, it gets better every time. The Hush thing has lit a little fire under the Bat-Fan in me. Now I have to re-read Long Halloween so I can finally read the sequel (also by Jeph Loeb, 26 issues of goodness there too, with paintings by Tim Sale).

Dark Knight is the shizz. I love the night he comes back and they aren't showing him. Like when he rips up the cabbie's check and then the thunder goes KRACKA-DOOM! It's totally cinematic. What a rush.

I also like how Miller redefined the interior monologue thing and everybody has been using it since ( some more effectively than others). He completely changed the DK again. It shows what kind of scary mind Batman has. "This would be a fine death...but not tonight." Bruce is whack, dude.

Now I have to reread it. Thanks, jj you tool.

YOU WILL READ EVERYTHING I READ!!!! YOU WILL NOT REST UNTIL YOU READ EVERYTHING I READ!!!!!

The first book is absurdly wicked. The passage about the monster growling and writhing in his stomach is just too much. The cinematics of the storm brewing, then crashing right when he unleashes the bat is unbelievable - never to be equalled. "The rain is a baptism - I am born again." How the hell is Joe Schmo supposed to top that?

It wouldn't be so tough, except ALL my reading material is at my folks in the basement, and it is blocked off by boxes and boxes of Star Wars/other toys. So getting a 50 lb comic box, out from under 3 other comic boxes and off of a shelf with only a foot of open space is sometimes, and quite often, frankly, not worth the time and effort.
