Do blu ray players also play DVDs? I've had my current DVD player for about 10 years now. It is a Sony 5-disc carousel. I'm afraid to buy one because I keep expecting a new format to come out and make them obsolete.

They do. I'd buy one if DVDs and BluRays were comparable in price, to be honest, but they're not.
The special features fiasco that bugged me was Wall-E. It's a movie about us destroying the world with our garbage, and they put it in eco-friendly (read: not disc friendly) packaging. It was available in 1-disc (barebones) and 3-disc versions. What about a guy like me, who wants the extra features but doesn't give a rat's ass about the digital copy? To get them, I've got to also get a worthless third disc. Seemed really hypocritical to me.

That was bullshit they pulled with Wall-E.
Digital copies could make great coasters.

You know what's worse from Disney, that I just discovered today?
I pre-ordered Ponyo on DVD at the end of December. My daughter loved Ponyo. I was a little annoyed that it came out last May, and won't be out until early March, when P&TF looks like it'll still be on in theaters when it comes to DVD in a few weeks, but no biggie.
So, this morning, I discover a gift set Disney hadn't solicited until sometime within the past week (barely a week before the release date): just a few bucks more, and it includes the DVD and a stuffed Ponyo toy.
Given that Disney has this weird relationship with Studio Ghibli, where they praise the hell out of them and distribute their movies in America, but otherwise don't acknowledge their existence and seem to try to sabotage them at the box office, this will probably be the only time such a toy (or any toy from Ponyo) is made available here, at least at prices where they're for kids and not assholes in their parents' basements.
On the one hand, no huge deal; what she doesn't know exist won't hurt her. But if it's in stores and she sees it, oh man, that's going to suck. She's already reached the point toy manufacturers seem to not believe exists, where she asks why she can get a Sid the Science Kid doll but none of his friends, and why aren't there Ewok dolls?

Or, more importantly, where are the Phineas & Ferb toys? It's only one of Disney's biggest shows right now...
A couple of stuffed animals (that you can't seem to find in stores anyway) doesn't cut it.

Hell, I dropped almost $50 for the 3 stuffed toys that I got for the kids.

But there is no Doofenshmirtz toy, dammit!
Boy, did this topic ever get derailed...

Maybe so, but, really, how can the toy companies be so oblivious for so long? This is like the kids who would come into TRU when I worked there ages ago and not understand why Hasbro made so many Batman figures and so few Jokers that you simply couldn't find them. A mistake they repeated until they lost the license, and a mistake Mattel has repeated ever since.
Really, you don't need fifty fucking different Batman figures if you can't find a single villain for him, and the only supporting cast member is a weird Robin in silver armor.

but that's true of any physical media at this point.
i've only seen maybe one or two movies where there was a completely separate extra disc for the digital copy. mostly it's on the second 'special features' disc, and it's just a portal to the itunes listing where you put in your redemption code. i think the only one i have that's actually a third disc is hellboy II.

Most of the ones I've gotten have a separate disc with just the digital copy.

What format are the digital copies in? Could I just copy the file off the disc and watch it on my computer or PSP?

Usually Windows Media Player or itunes.

The catch is they expire, usually within a year of the DVD release date.

so I caved and bought a blu-ray player last week. Wal-Mart had a Magnavox Blu-Ray player for 78 bucks clearance price so I bit the bullet. I got some blu-rays from my job, Dark Knight and Prince Caspian, so I didnt have to initially shell out money for those as well.
