HA, thanks, yeah there's actually five different directions that the studs point in the engine. in the front, those large wedge pieces are up and down, with the 1x10 curved slopes and other pieces pointing out each side. on the flip side, at the exhaust end, the studs are facing straight out the back as well as the sides.

i could put something in place of the 2x2 round tiles and the 2x10 plate beneath them, but that's as deep as it goes - i'm using a bunch of those new 1x2 45° slopes with the two plates cut out of the back, so there's only two plates depth available. that said, i left it flat there in case i wanted to develop modules that would lay on top of them somehow. obviously the modules are customizable - it is ultimately LEGO, which is the most modular you can get ;)

This is totally off-topic, but I hadn't really noticed until someone pointed it out:

Do they not make just plain-old Lego sets anymore? Everything I see is a specialized sub-line or licensed property.

No, they still make "Basic" buckets.

that depends on what you consider "plain-old LEGO sets". when we were kids, they had plenty of specialized themes - Space, Town, Pirates, etc... there were also some "basic brick" buckets, but there were always themes and sub-themes thereof. you can check out this year's releases for an indication of how the sets round out the entire product line.

It seemed the next logical extension of the Modular Starfighter system to branch out into larger spacefaring craft. This first design leans heavily on the look of Star Trek shuttles, with engine nacelles akimbo, sloping front windscreen and angled rear access. Just as was the case with the Modular Starfighter, I foresee a lot of variations/expansions of this new platform.

With the unprecedented performance of the "Firedemon" engine modules developed for the "Oni" and "Ryu" starfighter, Tanuki Corp. began to target segments of the spacecraft market previously unexplored by the company.

The inaugural offering from this new line of Modular Spacecraft, the "Niuma" (Japanese for "Packhorse") Class Light Cargo Shuttle proved a very reliable and popular intra-solar-system delivery vehicle for Galactic Handling and Logistics (GHL) as well as other parcel delivery companies.

With a crew compliment of two, a spacious cargo area and large rear loading door/ramp, the features are utilitarian but accommodating enough to endear it in the hearts of those who fly it.

The new module format lends itself to many configurations ranging from this light cargo shuttle, to passenger shuttles, luxury space yachts, and large public transport craft as well as military applications such as gunboats and dropships. The highly configurable/customizable nature has also attracted the attention of smugglers and bounty hunters as well, though most render the factory parts nearly unrecognizable, being surrounded by aftermarket and/or one-off custom modules built to personal spec.

anyway...

I made some modifications to the 'standard' for the modules, adding two more rows of module 'hardpoints' - one towards the top and one at the very bottom, in addition to the one already existing. I've updated the files here:

Evolving out of the versatile modular platform introduced in the "Niuma" Class Light Cargo Shuttle, the "Watashimori" (Japanese for "Ferryman") features, in addition to the cockpit, step-up collar and rear access hatch from its predecessor, a cabin compartment accommodating 12 passengers with bulkhead pressure doors at either end and four "Firedemon" engines connected via a new wing module for clearance/visibility.

I like the new wing extension between the main body and the engine nacelles. That's a cool design.

that's nothing compared to the working, gear-driven bulkhead doors at either end of the passenger cabin...

And here's the proof of that mechanism:

Also, a new starfighter:

Image
"Raijin" Class modular light interceptor by vynsane, on Flickr

While the "Kitsune" Class light interceptor filled a vital role in many fleets and performed admirably, it became apparent that it had reached the end of it's production lifecycle after the "Oni" and "Ryu" classes gained prominence.

Building on the performance abilities of the "Firedemon" engine modules both of those models share while looking for ways to reduce maintenance costs, Tanuki Corp. decided that a single-engine fighter would fill the gap left by the retirement of the "Kitsune". This also afforded them the ability to reduce the weight and size of the craft, greatly improving power/weight ratio.

Benchmark testing places the "Raijin" on par with the twin-engined "Oni" for speed and beats all other records for maneuverability. The over-all ship profile is reduced by 35% when compared to the "Kitsune", which greatly helps in evading enemy fire.

Lately I've been looking for either the UCS Falcon or UCS Star Destroyer on eBay. I knew that they'd be expensive (I was planning on spending at most $500-$600 for each) but then I fucking looked and some of these fucktards are trying to get $1,500 for them. Do they really think they'll get that much for them? Are there any other sites out there that sell old sets for reasonable prices?! I don't even care if they're open as long as it's got all of the pieces and the instructions. I don't even need the damn box.

seems like the standard price for the Falcon. i think you're looking for it at the height of the tulip madness on that one, since it was just discontinued last year: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?itemID=68171

the Star Destroyer seems a bit more reasonable: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?itemID=17643

It's funny. In the Lego community those people are called 'investors'.
In every other Toy Forum they'd be labeled Scalpers.

nah, they're still considered scalpers. but i think it's more accepted in the lego community because it's a relatively high-priced hobby, but the distribution is generally pretty even, and the sales are regular enough that everyone can get what they want for a reasonable price. if you do miss out on something, it's because other things took priority and you're going to end up paying more for it later.

I actually checked bricklink and am very tempted to buy one of those Star Destroyers. That's a lot of money but I'm stuck in a shithole country making money so I may as well spend it on fun shit.
