I was taking my daughter to gymnastics this monring and realized I was behind a blue Nissian Rogue. It had 4 otter-related stickers and the license plate was "OTTERLVR". Could that have been Bizzaro Anarky?

So I've been thinking about getting a new vehicle. When my youngest kid turned 16 and got her license, I gave her the car I was driving to her. A bit later, I bought a '98 Chevy S10 for $5k. Just a beater to drive around on weekends and run errands. I'm not a mechanic, but I can do some basic stuff, and I figured a '98 was still in my range of ability. Since I had it, I dumped a few more grand into it. It was back in the shop this weekend because it needed an oxygen sensor and I need to get it done so I can get it smogged. I tell the guys at the shop that I don't want to sink a ton of money into it because I'm probably going to sell it by the end of the year. I was just telling someone the other day that it wouldn't be a bad little project truck, but I'm not sure I'd be the right person to do it.
As I mentioned, my oldest kid has basically moved out. My youngest graduates college at the end of this year. My wife said I could get a new vehicle. I don't want anything brand new because I whatever I get, I want to last 10-12 years. I started looking at 2023-24 Toyota 4Runners, or something like a Jeep Wrangler.
When I go to pick it up, they said it was a good little truck and was wondering why I'd want to sell it. They basically walked me through a Pimp my Ride/Counting Cars tutorial. It could be fixed up for $25-$35K over time and not $45-$50k with payments. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm leaning towards fixing up the S10.

When you say ‘over time’ what kind of time frame is that?
Only because the truck is already almost 30 years old at this point. How many miles are on it? Kicking in $35k on a truck over the next 5-10 years(not counting the $5k you paid for it and however much you’ve spent on upkeep over the last 8 years) and you’re starting to get close to what the original brand new cost of the truck was back in ‘98. Except now it’s pushing 40.
I’d never buy brand new ever. But finding a “new” used vehicle that’s a few years old, with low mileage and all the modern amenities would be a better choice in my mind.

It has 155k miles on it. It already has a new AC unit, oxygen sensors, serpentine belt, and exhaust manifold.
I've started pricing things out. For the interior, I need probably $1200 in parts for what I can do. There is probably another $200 worth of work I can do under the hood. It would need a transmission, breaks, shocks/struts, and wheel bearings. According to Google's AI, that is somewhere around $7500. There is probably a bunch of other stuff I'm missing. Restoring an old vehicle sounds cool and it could be my new "hobby", but I'm afraid of losing interest in the project.
While we were out yesterday, I saw another 4Runner. I think I at least want to test drive one. From what I've read the 2021-2024 models are the best.
Google AI told me that restoring the S10 is stupid and to go with the 4Runner. I just want something that I can drive everyday that will last for 10+ years.

I also googled. A no-frills S10 in 1998 would run you $12k, a fully tricked out one would be around $24k. If it had sentimental or nostalgic value to you, I’d say go for it.

Complete change of plans. We were trying to figure out what to do today. I started doing searches for 4Runners at local dealers and maybe test drive one. As we discussed it, we kind of went full circle on why I bought the S10 to begin with. It is just a beater for me to drive one weekends because I have a truck from work I drive during the week. I don't really need a $40k 4Runner just sitting around. I'm going to get some more maintenance done next week on the S10 and skip the pimping out part of it. Maybe I'll look at getting something new next year.
