Is there any day more Manly....

Post by Tom Foolery »

Than June 6th?

I submit no.

It's D-Day. The Longest Day. Operation Overlord. Everybody's t-count jumps up a bit on June 6th. Everybody's dicks swing a little heavier. Gay guys find women hot on D-Day. Nerds get the guts to punch bullies on D-Day. Even terrorists hiding in their caves hang the American flag and drink beer on D-Day, acknowledging its inherent manliness.

So give a salute to the Canadian, British, and American ass kickers who stormed the beaches at Normandy and parachuted in behind enemy lines. Fuck you, bad guys of the world. This is Hero Day.

This is D-Day. Bitches.

Also on this date, Tetris was first released and Steve Vai was born.

Yup, think you're right.

I watched The Longest Day in honor of S+BJ Day. I might dig Band of Brothers out and rewatch that next.

Also, can you believe Saving Private Ryan came out 15 years ago?? To put it in perspective, that's basically the amount of time between when Return of the Jedi left theaters and The Phantom Menace came out in theaters. Or another way to look at it, my kid was 3 months old when SPR came out. Now she's studying for her learner's permit.

The trick is to make the womenfolk think it was Their idea.
It'd be the male version of Valentine's Day.

I thought it was already recognized. If you check out S&BJ day it's around March some time or something.

Which already borders on too much manliness for a month that's 2/3 winter.

I always thought S&BJ day was August 14 (6 months from Valentine's Day).

Hmmm...a cursory inspection of Aug 16th's "Manly cred" reveals
  • Daniel Boone married a 16 year old(Daniel Boone is manly. Marrying 16 year olds is not.)
Field & Stream magazine started (F&S is a partially manly magazine. Well, manlier than Cosmo and Vogue and shit)
China entered WWI (WWI is manly, but not as manly as WWDeuce)
Congress okayed funding for the Pentagon (the Pentagon in manly)
Japan surrendered, ending WWII (hella manly)
The whiffle ball was invented (not manly)
William Friedkin got a star on the Walk of Fame (Friedkin's bastard is Michael Bay.)
Shannon Faulkner first Woman in The Citadel Military Academy (not manly)
Mila Kunis is born (not manly, but she's hot)
All told, nothing on that list trumps the Manliness of D-Day.

1183 – Taira no Munemori and the Taira clan take the young Emperor Antoku and the three sacred treasures and flee to western Japan to escape pursuit by the Minamoto clan (traditional Japanese date: Twenty-fifth Day of the Seventh Month of the Second Year of Juei).
Any major date in the Genpei War is badass.
1851 – Doc Holliday, American gambler and dentist (d. 1887)
He were purty manly.
1929 – Dick Tiger, Nigerian boxer (d. 1971)
No idea who this is, but that is one fucking badass name.
1941 – David Crosby, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (The Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and CPR)
Have you seen this man's mustache? HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN'S MUSTACHE?
Image
1966 – Halle Berry, American model and actress
Also hot.

However, the death of Enzo Ferrari negates all these, so your initial point stands.

Also, in the interest of complete thoroughness, I'm looking at March 14th as well. So far the only thing it has in its favor is being Albert Einstein's B-Day and the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list debuted.
However, against it appears to be a litany of Iceskating competitions and actor Chris Klein's birthday. Also, one of the MmmBob kids from Hanson was born. Which automatically disqualify it. I could look up more stuff, but it would seem pointless.

Certainly not more Manly than D-Day, But July 20th must get some respect for being A manly day. Perhaps Top Ten material.
  • Alexander the Great was born. Even if he was a poof, he conquered a large portion of the known world. Almost before he hit puberty. Manly.
Sir Edmund Hillary was born. Climbing Mt. Everest is manly. Doing it first is manly x 10.
Cormac McCarthy was born. He wrote The Road and No Country for Old Men.
A bunch of Germans tried to assassinate Hitler in Operation:Valkyrie. They failed. Trying to kill Hitler is pretty manly. Fucking it up, not so manly.
In 1965, Mel Stottlemyer hit an in-park Grand Slam. That's hella manly.
'69 was a big one. Carol Mann won the LPGA Danbury Lady Carling Open, Eddy Merckx won the Tour de France....oh, and a couple hotshot astronauts WALKED ON THE GODDAMN MOON. MANLY.
Bruce Lee died. Even Bruce Lee DYING is more manly than most men.
Actor Josh Holloway was born. I only mention it because he was born in '69 so he was born while dudes were walking on the moon.
Percy Daggs III was born. He gets mentioned because he played Wallace Fennel on Veronica Mars and that show is awesome.
The important thing here is Neil and Buzz leaving boot prints on La Luna. Everything else on the list is gravy. So congrats July 20th, you are high on the Manly List.

Today was a pretty awesome day. I got a lot accomplished.

I witnessed a Solar Eclipse*

I bought the winning Powerball ticket**

I bought Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II on Bluray***

*It was all rainy and overcast here, so I didn't actually see the eclipse. Except on TV.

**The drawing isn't until Wednesday, so cannot actually confirm the "winning" portion of that claim. But I'm fairly confident I'm gonna have $650M in a few days...maybe.

***Technically it doesn't go on sale until midnite, which would technically be tomorrow****

****Its only 10:00 PM here, so haven't actually bought it yet. But it's on my agenda. Assuming I don't fall asleep before then.

In summary....I didn't do much today.
