Sad news.

It's sad when any comic artist whose last name doesn't rhyme with piefeld leaves us.

Didn't he do a lot of the Marvel Universe trading cards about 15 years back?

Thanks for all the great art, Mike.

Whilst in Iowa, I was reading some old issues of Wizard from 1997, and they had an article on Jim Lee and his thoughts on the top ten hot new artists to watch. Number 10 was Wieringo. 9 was Turner. It was kind of freaky because I had read about Turner passing literally hours earlier.

(8 was Alex Ross, so I expect him to keel over shortly...)

Dwayne McDuffie R.I.P.

Post by Rollo Tomassi »

Longtime comics writer Dwayne McDuffie died today. I am in shock, especially since he's been in the comics press so much recently because his Animated Apaptation of Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman is being released soon.

McDuffie first hit my radar with his irreverant Damage Control series for Marvel. he later went on to revamp Deathlok as a pacifist trapped in a killer cyborg's body (still my favorite version). Then he co-created the Milestone Universe at DC which focused on minority characters like StaticShock. He recently had runs on Fantastic Four (when Black Panther and Storn joined the team) and JLA.

He was also heavily involved in the Animated universe, as a producer on the Justice League Unlimited show, and one of its regular writers. And more recently as a writer on many of the new DC Animated Films coming out.

Damn. He will be missed. RIP Dwayne. :(

Gene Colan RIP

Post by Diabolical »

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned.

Colan died on June 23, 2011, following complications from liver disease and a broken hip received in a fall.

Best known for runs on Daredevil, Howard the Duck and Tomb of Dracula, and co-creating Falcon, Marvel's first black hero, and vampire hunter Blade.

THE Daredevil artist as far as I'm concerned, but his work was all over the Marvel U. Sad indeed.

The list of artists who could make Stilt Man actually look like a bad guy has shrunk by one forever. :(

For some reason, my collecting habits and Colan's work hardly crossed paths back in the 80s and 90s. He was working primarily at DC then on books I wasn't reading. And by the time I restarted in 2003 his output was minimal. The first book I distinctly remember him on was a fill-in issue of Iron Man. There was a cover of a Hulk issue. And Wolverine 9.

But I once saw this book whilst rifling through some back issues (it was way out of my price range) and was blown away.

That's a pretty righteous Iron Man indeed. Iconic, I believe is the word.

R.I.P. and Thanks for Everything

Post by Rollo Tomassi »

Sheldon Moldoff passed away at age 91.

He, along with Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, and a bunch of other talented chaps (NONE OF WHOM are Bob Kane!!) created Batman as we know him.

Thank you Shelly, you wonderful man.

The Shelly in my collection is comparatively small.

Those 80 Page Giants were just mega reprints of random earlier stories in no discernible order.

It is a source of eternal contempt for me, the rank villainy of Kane passing so many people's work off as his own and WB/DCs complicity in perpetuating the ruse.

Eh. I looked him up (never heard of the guy before), and his artwork was neither AWESOME! nor EXTREME! Not saying it's a good thing when someone dies, but he was no Steven Platt.
Should I look down and say it?
