Awwwww, daddy-o, ol' Snigtad made a booboo. I know that don't sound none too smooth, but it's hard to keep things straight when you've got the women lined up outside your door, and you've got to impart the smoothness to the vynsaniacs while flipping Birth of the Cool (LP, of course) to side B. Smooooooth Day is actually June 3, not May 13. I had my calendar upside down, dig?

Today's dose of smoothness comes courtesy of my old favorite, in statistics and image processing, creating an approximating function that attempts to capture important patterns in the data, while leaving out noise or other fine-scale structures/rapid phenomena. Many different algorithms are used in smoothing, dig. One of the most common algorithms is the "moving average", often used to try to capture important trends in repeated statistical surveys. In image processing and computer vision, smoothing ideas are used in scale-space representations, mmm-hmm!

Yo, I was wrong again, cats. Well, not really, but you just can't celebrate Smooooooth Day without proper preparations, so I've moved it again to June 13.

Today we celebrate the smoothness that was Mel Torme. That man could've bedded Queen Elizabeth. He could've had a three-way with Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana if he'd wanted to. But he was too smooth to descend to the level of merely consummating with royalty. He preferred the ever-loving coolness of merely being that supercool cat who was often alluded to on Night Court.
