People of Lesbos take gay group to court over term 'Lesbian'

ATHENS, Greece - A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.

Three islanders from Lesbos — home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women — have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.

One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.

"My sister can't say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou. "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said.

The three plaintiffs are seeking to have the group barred from using "lesbian" in its name and filed a lawsuit on April 10. The other two plaintiffs are women.

Also called Mytilene, after its capital, Lesbos is famed as the birthplace of Sappho. The island is a favored holiday destination for gay women, particularly the lyric poet's reputed home town of Eressos.

"This is not an aggressive act against gay women," Lambrou said. "Let them visit Lesbos and get married and whatever they like. We just want (the group) to remove the word lesbian from their title."

He said the plaintiffs targeted the group because it is the only officially registered gay group in Greece to use the word lesbian in its name. The case will be heard in an Athens court on June 10.

Sappho lived from the late 7th to the early 6th century B.C. and is considered one of the greatest poets of antiquity. Many of her poems, written in the first person and intended to be accompanied by music, contain passionate references to love for other women.

Lambrou said the word lesbian has only been linked with gay women in the past few decades. "But we have been Lesbians for thousands of years," said Lambrou, who publishes a small magazine on ancient Greek religion and technology that frequently criticizes the Christian Church.

Very little is known of Sappho's life. According to some ancient accounts, she was an aristocrat who married a rich merchant and had a daughter with him. One tradition says that she killed herself by jumping off a cliff over an unhappy love affair.

Lambrou says Sappho was not gay. "But even if we assume she was, how can 250,000 people of Lesbian descent — including women — be considered homosexual?"

The Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece could not be reached for comment.

Is this another one of those stories that's so weird it doesn't need a final parting comment from me to add a humorous twist? Yup, I think it is.

I don't know, but I caught that too at some point in the last decade. I was always taught as a kid that "gay" referred to both men and women, but was very derogatory. "Homosexual" was the preferred term if talking about both genders, but not simply "homo" under any circumstances.

If specifying by gender, "faggot" was supposedly the proper term for men, as opposed to any of a number of slang terms (including the shortened "fag"). "Lesbian" was the preferred term for women, but not "lesbie" or "lessie." For some reason, "butch" was borderline okay, but "dyke" offended most.

So, either I was told the exact opposite, or the rules changed at some point.

it seemed to me that "gay" was used as the descriptive term for homosexual men and "lesbian" was for homosexual women, hence "GLAAD" being the "Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation" - note this isn't the "Homosexual and Lesbian Alliance..." - of course, then that acronym doesn't turn into a wordish thing unto itself a la glaad/glad. hlaad looks something akin to a shiite muslim fatwah group or something.

perhaps our resident gay/homosexual/lesbian cybernetic organism might shed some light on this... jjreason, i'm looking in your direction...

I realize I'm not the resident gay/homosexual/lesbian cybernetic organism jjreason, but...

I think the whole thing is stupid. As far as I'm concerned, the celebrated home of Wonder Woman SHOULD win the case. :mabs: But if Wonder Woman digs chicks, that's ok with me too :heybaby:

On a serious note, the whole PC name thing for gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender is a waste of time and breath. Who the HELL gives a shit who someone sleeps with and what kind of transformations you have done to your sexual organs! And why do so many gay people feel the need to shout it out to the world and expect others to just take it?? Having these names further segregates this population and yet they are fighting for acceptance :???:

On yet another note, I realize that the "gay" people of Greece did not start this.

It is only a name, people need to chill out and put their time and resources toward more important endeavors like space travel 8)

Seven and Bumcake need to have their own Q&A thread. Ok, I gotta ask: The women's locker room at the gym...is it as wonderful as some men may envision? My theory is that it is probably not and there are things that no man would want to see. You know, like expecting a hot wet Heather Locklear and getting a naked Rosanne Barr picking toe cheese.

Excluding my high school locker room from 2 decades ago, I have never been in a women's locker room at a gym. I have all the work out equipment I need at home. However, knowing my friends that partake in gymular activity, I would say that it is half what you envision and half the latter. It's funny though because my friends (girls) that I know that do go to the gym always come home and take showers and change clothes rather than be around a bunch of who knows what with who knows what kinds of diseases.

I might have to do some research on this question ;)
