Pirates of the Carribean

i don't care, the first three were a blast, and i'm there for the fourth. while knightly is hot, the loss of both her and orlando bloom isn't a huge problem, as the draw was jack sparrow. that character alone made the movie go from 'it was okay' to 'that was fucking awesome!' making a PotC movie without elizabeth and will isn't a huge deal. making a PotC movie without jack sparrow would just be idiocy.

POTC 1 is an incredibly awesome film. So much fun.
And while I really liked both POTC 2 & 3, they had their problems, most of which stemmed from not having a completed script when they started filming, which left the film bloated and disjointed at times.

The after credit ending:

This end nicely concludes the story of Will and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is knocked up (then has a kid to take care of), making it tough for her to join Jack Sparrow on another adventure. Will didn't disappear for 10 years, he just couldn't step on land for 10 years, IIRC, which makes the return of his character possible (but doubtful).

But none of that really matters since Jack Sparrow is the real star of the series. Without him - no movie.

Sounds good to me, all the movies have been great.

Diabolical, at the end of the third, Jack discovers Barbosa is going after the fountain of youth. So, I dont think Will would play a part in this one unless it took them ten years to reunite Sparrow and Barbosa.

True. And I'm sure POTC 4 will not take place 10 years later.
I think I had the 10 years thing mixed up. I thought he could only walk on land once every ten years, but he could sail the seas all he wanted.

Wiki has an interesting take on Will's fate:
While dialogue in the films and the leaflet inside the special edition 2-Disc DVD state that any captain of the Flying Dutchman is eternally bound to the ship, and may only step on land once every ten years, the film's writers explain in the DVD's commentary that Will could be released from his duties after the ten-year period if Elizabeth remained faithful to him. Which she is and he is freed from the dutchman.

If that's true, its almost as obvious as the whole "Ving Rhames' soul is in the box and that's why he has a band-aid on his neck" bit Tarantino swears is the case with Pulp Fiction, even though there's NOTHING in the film to suggest that. I think the movie itself was pretty clear that Will Turner will be the captain of the Dutchman for a long, long time.

If it were true, why would Davey Jones still be captain all these years afterward; Calypso seemed to be faithful to him.

that's what i thought it was - the end scene was him being released from his curse because she waited for him.

i think it was that she would have, but davey jones turned his back on her, thus dooming himself to the flying dutchman, or something...

I saw the first in theaters and several times on DVD and loved it since the first time I saw it. When I saw the second one, it reeked of sequel-syndrome, in that it was the exact same as the first movie, but more of it. The dog-and-prisoners joke was funny and a fun callback to the ride; the Elizabeth-and-prisoners joke was lame. Will playing Nautical Yahtzee was fucking boring and inane. Davy Jones was awesome, though, and his crew was interesting-looking and well animated, but that was really the only good part about the sequels. I didn't like how just about every character from the first film reappeared in the second - and if they didn't, well, they're in the third. I realize that the Star Wars did this to a degree as well, but it somehow felt more organic there; here, things like Pintel and Ragetti returning as heroes reminded me of Iago returning as a hero in the third Aladdin movie (which I haven't seen since I was seven, so don't judge me :P ). I liked Barbossa, but he fucking died in the first one and it was a great, emotional scene; bringing him back just because they could was a cop-out.

I mentioned the heavy-handed mythology, which was introduced in the second one but ramped up in the third; I was actually really enjoying the intro to the third one, with the Chinese pirates and such, and then it just fucking dragged on and on and on. Maybe I was more open to the mystical elements of the first one since they were based on the ride, which I was already familiar with, and not too over-the-top. I guess I just like zombie pirates more than I like hundred-foot-tall ladies turning into crabs.

In short, the first one was a fun, well made adventure movie. The sequels were boring and bogged down in their own overly complicated mythology, about which I couldn't give two shits.

(Just an aside: Relating it back to SW, anarky, I think it's interesting how I thought the prequels got better as they went on and POTC got worse as it went on, and you're just the opposite.)
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Disney has pushed PotC 5 back from 2015 to 2016. That makes sense, since the Mouse House had its three biggest franchises (Star Wars, Avengers, and Pirates) all competing in the same summer.

Also, I'm sure the fact that every time they hand Jerry Bruckheimer $200M+ lately, he pisses it away, was a factor. Sorcerer's Apprentice, Prince of Persia, Lone Ranger, et al. And with a pair of newcomer directors on Pirates 5 the script has to be primo and fuckup proof.

I haven't seen any of the POTC films. They've never appealed to me. I have them all. I obtained copies shall we say. I might put them all on in sequence just to piss off my other half who regularly makes me suffer the mind blowingly awful Matrix trilogy.
I'm just not into big budget, big hype movies these days. I be happier with a small independent flick or a bunch of short movies.
I thought i had something to say here but it turns out i don't have anything worth contributing. Meh.

I hesitate to exclaim "You MUST watch teh Pirates movies! Ehrmegerrd they r awesumz!!" because overhyping things tends to backlash and gets your expectations too high.

That being said, If you go back and read the beginning of this topic, I think you'll find the first Pirates movie caught everybody off guard with how good and fun and full of energy it was. Thats not unfounded. The 2nd and 3rd movie work best when viewed all together. And the 4th film isnt as great as the trilogy, but it's a solid (slightly weaker) stand alone film. The 4th had an impossibly high standard to maintain on a smaller budget, so it gets knocked a bit.

Personally, I'd rather rewatch the PotC films over many other recent big budget franchise/trilogies, including the Prequels, Spider-Man, Transformers, Matrix, Nolan's Batman, Harry Potter etc.

I'm sure I'll watch a ton of these big budget movies at some point. The last movie I managed to sit through that I actually put on with the intention of watching start to finish was Moonrise Kingdom.

Holy shit! It's a year and a half since I forgot to reply!

Apparently Johnny Depp has hurt his hand and can't film for a while. POTC 27: The Cash Cow Sequel has its release date pushed back.
