Top Summer Film of 2020

Post by Tom Foolery »

Well, here we are again. Let the speculation begin.

I actually think for the first time in a long time, there’s no real clear favorite this year. Marvel has been dominating for the past few years, but I don’t see Black Widow as a sure thing.

Fast and Furious have been doing ridiculously well the last few outings.
Artemis was supposed to come out last August/Sept but got bumped to May so somebody at Disney liked what they saw.
My personal choice to win is WW84.
Jungle Cruise has the potential to be the next Pirates. It has that vibe.
Everything else on the list is just to fill out the ten slots.
I’m not even sure what the fuck Tenet is. But Chris Nolan never does anything half-ass
I almost had James Bond on the list instead of Morbius. I’ve had April movies on here before, but I don’t think one has a more legitimate shot than the other. Morbius at least has the Marvel logo on the front of the film to help it.

Sooooo...what do think?

i'm thinking it's Black Widow - a female-led Marvel movie vs. a female-led DC movie? c'mon.

Morbius is too much of an unknown (i know, that's what everyone said about GotG, but even still - against Black Widow???)

No clear winner, but never count out Vin Diesel and his cars.

Well. I’ll bet no one had Artemis Fowl as the winner.

It’s getting released on Disney+ next month. Everything else is postponed until the fall or later. (I’m seriously doubting WB will release Tenet in July like they’re aiming for.) So Artemis is the only actual film getting “released” during the summer and therefore, it wins by default. Like that time that ice skater won the gold medal because he was in last place and everyone ahead of him had an eight car pile up on the last lap and he slid by them all.

I'm going with Wonder Woman because I think it is the only one that is going to be released this summer. Most of the rest have been pushed to the end of this year or next summer.

I’m honestly not that put out by it. We went fairly regularly(at least once a month and sometimes twice in a month) and the lack of it hasn’t really disrupted my life in any meaningful way.

Honest question; when all the theater chains reopen and they’re all requiring masks in order to go to the movies, how are you supposed to eat popcorn and drink your soda pop if you’re wearing a mask?
And if you’re moving your mask everytime you take a sip or shove a handful of popcorn or candy into your mouth, what’s the point of wearing the mask?
And if they’re just not going to sell popcorn and drinks, then what’s the point of reopening? Because theaters don’t make money off the tickets. The absurdly vast majority of that money goes back to the studios(it’s like a 95/5% split in favor of the studios). Theaters make their money off the concessions. Which we can’t enjoy if we are wearing masks...

Theaters are dead. The studios already set a precedent for simultaneous home release. It may have been unusual circumstances, but, aside from arthouse theaters, they're not going to recover. Like you said, they don't make money off tickets, and the studios are no way going to give them a bigger cut.

Which sucks because both my town and the town immediately west have been begging for theaters for at least twenty years, and there are half-finished multiplexes in both that were supposed to open this year. So, in other words, vacant buildings not easily adapted to other businesses.

Maybe more drive-in will pop back up. There is less than 10 minutes from us that we've been to a couple times.

I just want a fun theater that only shows older movies: classics, indie films, cult classics, themed double-features, etc.

In Regina, Rainbow Cinemas was operating on a classics & just-out-of-theatre hits basis since I was here as a student 20 years ago (yes, I saw Fight Club & American Pie over & over back then). $2 tickets back then & It had only gone up to $5 in the interim. The last movie I saw there was Joker. It is now closed and won't reopen. :(
