Continuing from the assbomb discussion.

Skyfall is about a mother and her two orphan sons. One became the worst villain, and the other the best.
M's last line "Well, I got one thing right." is such a great delivery. Having grown up an orphan, Bond's relationship with M is as close as he ever got to a child/parent relationship. It was quite touching in its own way, considering how fucking cold and ruthless he is, and how much she has to maintain that political aloofness as well. Craig and Dench both aced their roles with the nonspeaking eye contact and 'between the lines' dialogue they fence with. That's why he's such a determined agent. He doesnt want to let his "Mom" down.

Then of course that all falls apart when she orders Eve to take the shot, putting the mission first. He almost dies, spends months 'dead' and moping drunk. Then he has to come back a fix their relationship because her other 'son' Silva is wrecking everything Symbolic about M and Bond's relationship. MI6 blowing up, spies getting outed and killed, etc. Silva's island HQ and all the exotic locales is fuckall set dressing. Even the location in the third act is dressing. Sure it adds a layer of symbolism, but it's like margarine on a slice of bread. Adds flavor, but ultimately nonessential.

It isn't as rambunctious as other Bond films, but It's a great film.

I was very excited about the concept - the disclosure of the MI6 agents' whereabouts, faces, etc had me expecting something very different - kinda like Chux wanted Vader running around killing Jedi wearing the armor to be ROTS. It didn't become what I thought it would. And then when it seemed to be ready to turn into the modern day Man with the Golden Gun - Bond Vs Bad, mano y mano - it didn't turn into that either. It felt very disjointed. Why did we get the last locale again? Oh, that's right - for no reason. Maybe I missed it, but it seemed out of nowhere. Also, Javier Bardem does not need "shocking" material to be bad. The absurd sexuality of the character didn't land right on me at all - gay is great, but this was Austin Powers Goldmember weird to me without the funny. It missed the boat for me scene by scene - even Ralph Fiennes seemed smarmy & wasted in his role.... why did they bother hiring him for that? Did that character die? Is there a view toward having him reappear in the future? I didn't get it - and I mean the whole movie.

The location at the end was/is Bond's childhood home where his parents died. It fits in with the whole 'dealing with his mommy/daddy issues' theme. Earlier in the film, when the shrink is doing word association with Bond he says the name of the home and pisses Bond off. Silva walks past his Bond's parents' headstone at the very end before he walks into the church and gives a slight chuckle because he realizes now where he is and what the final conflict has 'cost' Bond. Its also why Bond says "I always hated this place." before he blows the house up. Hint:You can tell the Bond Family Home is a big part of the film's theme because It's the NAME of the MOVIE.

I feel like you didnt watch the final scene in the movie. Ralph Fiennes is the new M. Naomi Harris is the new Moneypenny. The office Bond walks into at the very end is a perfectly recreated version on the Connery films' M office. Fiennes will be Bond's new boss for the forseeable future in upcoming movies. So, the opposite of a wasted role really.

Ok I forgot aboutFiennes taking the M position. That makes more sense. I knew it was the Bond family home. What drew them there? I'm going to reread the plot synopsis on imdb or something but I don't remember being clear about it at the time. Also, I was pissed they weren't having the 1v1 final showdown on the deserted island with the statues - why did we even get to see that place if it didn't amount to anything?

EDITED: I did read the plot synopsis. It helped refresh a few things that I had forgotten & actually reads like a better movie than I thought it was. It was a great departure from what I expected going in - and then again during the movie - which likely led to me being disappointed moreso that it being a bad movie per se did.

I'm guessing even though he had an aversion to it personally as Bond, as Agent 007 he used the location tactically without emotion. He knew the lay of the land better and it gave him an advantage. Yet another reason why he's an icy muthahfuckah.

How did he react to losing M again? It would have hit pretty hard if he had completely broken down.

Found the snippet. His reaction was suitable, although subdued.

i feel like it would all have meant a lot more if we gave a shit about who Silva was besides some throw-away lines explaining his vendetta. if he were the big bad behind QUANTUM it would have made a lot more sense in the context of the previous two movies and given everything a greater weight. as it is, we had two movies that were headed in the same direction and a third movie that was driving on a different road in a different country on a different continent. on a different planet. expectations were not met, and not in a good "oh, that was a surprising take" sort of way. it was disjunctive in a way that took me out of my enjoyment of the film. i appreciate all the callbacks to the other non-Craig bond movies and how it's come full-circle of sorts, but that could have been done while answering lingering questions of the past two movies featuring the same lead.
Life is short. STUNT IT!

He bottles it up, like usual.

I agree they missed the opportunity to advance the Quantum subplot, even if only tangentially.
Quantum was shaping up to be the 21st century SPECTRE. Although now Sony has the rights back to the actual SPECTRE.

They need to have a completely ridiculous villain for Bond. Not ridiculous but cool (thinking Oddjob here), but like a super genius Dr. No type... who always wears a clown suit. And has appropriately stupid weapons, henchmen, tortures, etc.

The next Bond film will be called Spectre.

That better live up to the expectations associated with the name.

I think I read that they have cast someone as Blofeld, but the name didn't register.

Christoph Waltz (went & checked) as per this article:

I'm not a fan of Bond films. I find them bloated and self indulgent. While the Daniel Craig ones have been closer to the navel gazing Bond of the books, they still miss the mark.

Yeah it's pure machismo-porn, no different than Rambo. Maybe a bit more stylish. Maybe if you liked girls in bikinis more.... :P

Maybe if there were more men in speedos. I read the part in that Daily Mail article about ski instructors and thought 'oh. chunky sweaters and puffa jackets.' It'll never be as hot as George Lazenby's Bond in a kilt in the Alpine retreat. :heybaby:
