I haven't read any of the asides. I think they're kind of like enrichment - a la JK's Tales of Beadle the Bard or Tolkien's appendices. Take them as far as you like, but get the main books done first in my opinion.

I might like to read them eventually, but I'm in no hurry, since they're each a prequel series and I doubt they'll add much to the greater story.

A Dance with Dragons, page 356 (paperback).
That dragon queen's got the real item, the kind that don't break and run when you fart in their general direction.

What does everyone think of R+L=J, the seemingly crazy theory that kinda makes sense?

The short version

That... that surprisingly makes an awful lot of sense. Ned fathering a bastard has always bugged me as a bit out of character.

Hi-fives JJ.
I enjoyed how that video paraphrased my post almost exactly, down to quoting the 'bed of blood' and 'Promise me, Ned.' A second reading of the series practically beats you about the face with this theory. If R+L=J isn't the truth, it's the most meticulously plotted red herring in the history of storytelling.

I also have a theory that Mad King Aerys had a thing for Tywin Lannister's wife and abused her one evening and the result was Tyrion. Which is why Tywin always detested the lad.
But it also makes Jon, Dany, and Tyrion the "three heads of the dragon" since they're the Targaryen heirs. Whatever shit happens in book 7 is gonna come down to those three sitting on the Throne.

Fatass needs to get to writin' afore the coronary gets 'im.

Hmmm.... Tywin was the Hand, and left abruptly under unexplained circumstances, right? That could explain it, though I'm not sure if a time frame was given for that or not. Course, he didn't have to find out immediately and then leave King's Landing.

I checked out the first two volumes of The Hedge Knight comics from the library, and am noticing that, unlike a lot of these lines, there's less consistency character-wise in the Targaryen line (whereas a lot of families seem to have one or two defining traits and the occasional outlier, the Targaryens appear to be a nice mix of heroes and assholes from the get-go), so it rather fits. Tyrion obviously doesn't fit nicely into the Lannister mold.

There's also the early line "All dwarves are bastards in their fathers' eyes," which could mean more than it seems to. I can't think of much concrete evidence otherwise, though.

Tyrion with a Targaryen parent would also explain why the Mad King ordered Jamie to murder Tywin.

True.

Was there ever a dwarf Targaryen?

My problem with referencing this online is I'm trying to avoid 2.5 books worth of spoilers.

If he's not already dead, Ser Jorah has a big role to play, methinks. That ridiculous song about the woman who called for a knight and gets a bear instead has come up WAY too many times to not mean something.

Ser Jorah, a disgraced knight from a family that identifies itself with the bear? And hanging out with a fair maiden? Definitely more there....

I just checked GRRM's site on a flyer - still no date of publication for book 6. Dance with Dragons came out in 2011. That's now 4 years agao. I actually feel sick to my stomach knowing - KNOWING it's not going to get done. :(

There's a five year gap between 3 and 4.
And a six year gap between 4 and 5.
That suggests book 6 will be out in 2017.
And 2023 for the last one.
But assuming he's carefully, meticulously lining all this shit up, he'll be able to write the final one right quick. So maybe 2019/20 for the last one.
