Spawn is approaching issue 300. That’s a significant milestone issue because, as far as I know, Dave Sim’s Cerebus is the only creator owned book to ever make it that far. So when Spawn reaches and then passes it, it’ll hold the record going forward. Granted, Sim for the majority of the book wrote and drew the entire series, whereas McFarlane has farmed out both for the majority of Spawn’s run. (Larsen’s Savage Dragon will eventually hit 300 and I’m pretty sure he’s written/drawn every issue, but that’s a different topic for a different day) In any case, it’s a pretty big deal.

So here’s my issue with the milestone. Have you seen the covers for issues 298 thru 301? They are “homages” to McFarlane’s covers for his original Amazing Spidey run of issues 298-301. On the one hand, yes it’s a clever callback to McFarlane’s humble beginnings of comic stardom. But...
Isn’t it also kinda undermining his achievement? It’s like, “I’m still only known as the Spider-Man guy who left...” even three decades later. Spawn can’t stand on its own after 300 issues without having these gimmick covers? Is that just me?

I think Spawn is like the Simpsons - many people would be surprised to hear that it's still going.... and I'm guessing the content has remained quite as "fresh" as the first few seasons worth.

Was ex machina an Image book? I though it was Vertigo. Or maybe DC/Wildstorm.

Half my trades say vertigo, half say wildstorm. Never seen anything like it.

Edited - none of them, however, say image. Doh.

Just got to the black pages during my re-read of Saga (which I'm slightly behind on, that new issue came out at least one if not 2 weeks ago). It's not any easier the second time.

That sequence sometimes randomly pops into my head and then I just get sad all over again.

Also, my guy didn’t know Saga was coming out, so he didn’t order any. And then when he tried to back order it, they were already sold out and the 2nd printings are on the way. So I have to hunt down a copy somewhere.

Wow that is an epic fuck up.
And a great way to lose customers.

For real. I didn't know Saga was coming out, but I don't own a comic shop and mostly read in trades, so I don't have a need to know when one of the most popular titles is dropping.
