Damn, this book is awesome.
I really wish the Big Two would do something like this. They've tinkered (with stuff like Nextwave and X-Statix), but can't stick with this tone long-term.

Re: atomic robo
First three volumes. I expect to have the series done by the end of the week, at least what's in paperback.
I'm surprised I actually enjoyed a story about Lovecraft. I've never read any of his work and will not deny I might like the actual original stories, but all the endless references in other works to it annoy the hell out of me.

“One ‘defense’ for not making the effort to be inclusive is, ‘Aw, but man, I don’t want to have to think about this stuff, I just want to read/write stories.’ And, y’know what? We’re sympathetic to that. Thinking about it can be really taxing, confusing, and depressing. Imagine if you had to think about that stuff all the time. Perhaps due to being not white? Or not male? Or not straight?”
– Brian Clevinger, explaining why Atomic Robo is specifically designed to be as inclusive as possible, while still telling awesome stories

Re: atomic robo
also, that got me clicking around on their site and saw an awesome comment by Scott Wegener, the artist on the book:
Hellboy is one of my primary points of comparison when deciding if another comic is any good or not.
On a scale of One-to-Mignola, I currently give Atomic Robo about 6.5 Fists of Doom, but I feel we do better every volume, so by 2015ish we should be around an 8.5 FoD on my scale.
Life is short. STUNT IT!

No mammalian quote can be as awesome as a simple ordinary motorist who traveled through time using crystals and got his firearms legally.
Doctor Dinosaur may be my new favorite character ever.

I would drop every DC title for a Doctor Dinosaur monthly ongoing.

Re: atomic robo
The bit with him showing "The Big Book of Dinosaurs" as ID at the gun shop--I had to put the book down for about five minutes.

Finished Vol. 6 last night. And I wanted to cry. Because it means I'm caught up until the next paperback rolls around.

Re: atomic robo
The latest issue of AR:Real Science Adventures had a short story set in 1994. Robo visits a comic shop. It is the absolute funniest fucking comic story I have read all year, and perhaps all decade. It's pretty much kicking Image Comics right in the nuts.

Re: atomic robo
Just a sample of the dialogue.
Comic guy: Behold the glory of this week's releases.
Robo: that's a LOT of comics.
Comic guy: And almost half of them aren't even variants!
Robo: what're those?
CG: slightly different covers.
Robo: are they usually in bags like this?
CG: of course! They're collectors items!
Robo: how so?
CG: because they're all first issues!! They print millions of these things. They'll be worth a fortune!
Robo: I'm not sure that's how it works.
And so forth.
