Stupid, stupid computer question

computers are cool - they are the reason you are here right now! Hopefully, JJReason can build one and prove once and for all, Canadians are somewhat intelligent.

Stupid, stupid computer question

Post by anarky »

In case you couldn't tell from the topic, this is probably a really dumb question.

Is there an easy way to create a program (or find one for free online) that can take a massive list from a text or Excel file, ask a crapload of "A or B?" type questions (where A and B are both entries from the file), and then create a ranked list of all the entries from the original list?

If you have microsoft access, you might be able to do it. There might be a generic microsoft database if you have microsoft works (instead of office). It can be kind of tricky at first, but once you figure out how set up your tables and queries, your home free.

I have a stupid question of my own.

Today, my yahoo inbox had one of those "failed delivery" e-mail notifications. Is it just some clever spam or could someone have used a virus or something to use my account as a spambot?

most failed delivery emails are spam. they're just as annoying as regular spam.

let me try to get the "a or b" thing straight: you've got a column for "a" and a column for "b" and you want to then rank all entries based on their "a and b" status? i may be able to import the data as a "comma separated value" list into a mysql database and spit out a form in php that will let you do that. let me know if that would work. don't know how much you want/are able to divulge about the contents of the list, but i would need a bit more info to see if that's a viable solution.
Life is short. STUNT IT!

Another stupid question. I think it is different from my last question. My mom, wife, and at least one of my friends received an email from my yahoo account last night advertising Viagra or something. I didn't send it. Already changed my password. Does that mean I was hacked?

Let me tell you something. You don't want your mom calling you at 7am asking if you sent an email to her. She actually read more of it to me than I wanted to hear.

That would probably mean you've been hacked. It could be spoofing, but if three people got it, you've most likely been hacked. At the very least, change your password and send a quick message out telling folks you were hacked and to let you know if they get weird e-mails from you.

Speaking of hacked, my Mom got one of those Facebook hacks with the video where the thumbnail looks like a vagina. It happened to pop up a few seconds after I logged in one day recently, so I called her. I had to walk her through everything and explain that it's because she clicked on something. She told me she didn't think the person who posted it originally would've tried to hack her. I had to explain that they didn't, but to be careful clicking on stuff--if it looks questionable, skip it. Turns out it was one of my cousins who'd been hacked shortly before and spread it to Mom.

So, really, my Mom and at least one female cousin are clicking on pictures of vaginas with captions like "You wont' beeleieve this!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!" That's more than I cared to know.
