External Hard Drives

computers are cool - they are the reason you are here right now! Hopefully, JJReason can build one and prove once and for all, Canadians are somewhat intelligent.

External Hard Drives

Post by Diabolical »

I want move a bunch of stuff off my computer and have everything backed up so I don't lose everything if my computer ever dies.
I'm sure 1TB will be more than enough, but I have no idea what a good brand/model or price is.

Suggestions?

I've used both Seagate and Iomega, and had no issues with either. Truth be told, I'm in the process of (finally) digitizing my scary big CD collection, and think I may have to go larger than 1TB for that alone, so I'm going to be looking around sometime soon. (Trying to put it off as much as possible, knowing that this shit drops in price pretty continuously.)

i have two of these now - in fact, that's what i bought on my roadtrip because of how many pictures i was taking.

although i'm looking into setting up a NAS (network attached storage) so we can basically have a local network dropbox.

Don't go with cloud storage. Or your nudie pics might get hacked.

Of course, given what most people seem to think, this would totally not be your fault for trusting sensitive information to a third party.

My desktop is a bit old, but it runs fairly well.
The problem I realized while looking at external/portable hard drives is that my USB ports are still 1.0, which won't work.

Is upgrading to a 2.0 or 3.0 an easy fix?

USB 2.0 would be usable, but would still require an external power source. 3.0 would afford power so it's only one cable, which makes swapping a lot easher. the complication is, if your computer is too old, it might be hard to find an affordable PCI USB 3.0 expansion card. i found this one for $60.
