computers are cool - they are the reason you are here right now! Hopefully, JJReason can build one and prove once and for all, Canadians are somewhat intelligent.

I may throw up in my mouth...

Post by Slicker »

Today I was going through my external hard drive and apparently at some point it dropped some file...actually a LOT of files.

I lost some music, ALL of my porn, but, most devastatingly, I lost EVERY. SINGLE. PICTURE. All of the pictures that I took in Japan and all of the ports I went to. All of the pictures of the boat. All of my flight ops pictures. Gone. The porn can be redownloaded but those pictures are irreplaceable. *sigh*

Ouch.
You can (kind of) get some of your photos back. You used to post a bunch of pics at the other site ("I'm going to Japan" and/or "Post a picture of yourself" threads) and most of 'em are probably still there.

Damn. Though actually I think DB summed it up better with "ouch." Any idea how the files were eliminated?

you're sure you haven't written them to a DVD or CD instead of to the HD and maybe just got confused? if not, shit man... that fuckin' sucks. do you use a backup program or was it just drag and drop onto the external? i actually use both just as a precaution, and always verify that the files are actually there before i delete them from the computer i'm moving them from.

They were definitely on the external and just that. I was looking at the properties and such and I don't think they're completely lost. Checking the actual size of all folders inside the external shows that I have about 15GB worth of stuff but when I check to see how much space I've used on the HD it says that I'm using about 60GB which is what I was using up when I had all of the files.

I'm thinking that it got corrupted because I did drop it when I was bringing it into my house.

it might not be corrupt, but the platter those files are on or the reader arm that accesses that platter might be damaged and causing a) the data to not show up, and; b) the discrepancy in amount of free vs. used vs. (supposed) total space that the drive should have.

it might be worth your while to take it to geek squad or another computer tech place that can do data recovery.

I was thinkin' the same thing Vyn. Money is kinda tight so it'll have to go on the back burner but when I get a few extra dollars I'm gonna give it a whirl.
