Sons of Anarchy

most tv sucks these days, but there are some shining examples of good writing, acting, camera work, etc... we call those Deadwood and Arrested Development. Family Guy sucks ass, though...

Sons of Anarchy

Post by Diabolical »

Anyone?

After a coworker's recommendation, I've been watching via Netflix.
I'm currently half way through season 3.
Overall, its a pretty good show. I won't put it in my all time favorites, but it is pretty entertaining.

I've only seen Season 2, but I enjoyed it and would like to eventually watch all of it.

There is a shit ton of cool character actors in the series that we've all noticed over the years, but who really get a chance to shine in this show.

A friend from work lent me seasons 1 thru 5. I just started marathoning them last night.

I'm deep into Season 3 already. I'd love to discuss more, but I don't want to spoil plot points for some of you potential future viewers.

I love the growing list of character actors this show attracts. Michael Fairman just showed up as a recurring character. (He played Adelai Niska on Firefly.)
James Cosmo is playing a IRA Priest in season 3, so that's a mini Braveheart reunion with series regular Tommy Flanagan, as they were both in William Wallace's inner circle.
And I just noticed Robin Weigert replaced Tom Everett Scott as the Sons' attorney, so that's three Deadwood alumni so far on this show. Since she was wearing a nice pantsuit and her face wasn't covered in filth, I didn't make the Calamity Jane connection. Now I'm waiting for her to have a scene with Police Chief Wayne Unser, so she can call Dayton Callie(aka Charlie Utter) a cocksucker.

I'm about to start season 6.
Season 1: Good set up.
Season 2: Henry Rollins is a bad ass.
Season 3: Sucked. The Ireland visit seemed to drag on too long.
Season 4: The US Attorney thing kinda sucked, but Danny Trejo was cool.
Season 5: So much comes to a head. Having a hard time believing Jax is that smart.

Too many dead members.
I hate Tara. Such a cunt.
Such random guest stars: Steven King, Ashley Tisdale, Dave Navarro, David Hasselhoff, etc.
Random fact Johnny "Half Sack" Lewis died in real life also under bizarre circumstances.

Holy shit! I just googled Lewis.

While I was watching the first season, I said 'Holy Shit! This is totally Hamlet!' and then some internet research revealed that yes, Sutter is using Hamlet as the template so that's cool.

The Ireland stuff didn't bug me, but the boring subplot with Gemma's dad did.

The friend who lent me the DVDs accidentally spoiled one death for me Ope's and I returned the favor by spoiling Clay's which I read online a few weeks ago. She's not that far yet.

Oh, and don't click on those Spoiler Tags unless you want to be Spoiled, dumbasses.

Thanks for the warning.
Not really too upset about it though. I figure it was coming. The writing has been on the wall for a while now.

Just finished the season 3 finale where Opie killed Stahl and Chibs carved up Jimmy O. That was extremely gratifying after 3 seasons. I loved how calm Opie was in the backseat.

Also watched 4 brief scenes that take place between seasons 3 and 4 during the club's 14 month incarceration. The first is Jax getting shived by the Russians on Day 26. The second is a pregnant Tara talking to Piney about her suspicions about how JT died on Day 95. The third is Day 190ish with Gemma and Tara bringing newborn Thomas to visiting day to see his dad. The final one is Day 305 where Clay and Jax are setting up some new business venture with a Mexican cartel and Bobby having doubts. Jax tells him to get on board. I'm not sure if stuff like that shows up on Netflix or not, or if it's special DVD content.

Randolph Mantooth! is on the show as a Wahewa Indian tribal elder. That ups the cool factor of this show by at least a factor of 4. And it's a show that already has Ron Perlman and Tommy Flanagan on it.

None of that is on Netflix, unfortunately. I'll have it look for it online. I found it odd they briefly mentioned some of that stuff during the seasons.

This wouldn't be much of a show, I don't think.

I only have one son, so the name is wrong off the bat.

RIP Piney.

Also Kozik. Heh. They introduced a bunch of new guys in Season 3 and 4 just to have some cannon fodder. Or landmine fodder as it were.

After The Walking Dead, I get used to not even bothering to remember the names of new characters, as most will end up dead anyway.

There is a S.O.A. comic out there. The first six issues took place during season five (between episodes five and six to be exact), so its almost like a lost episode. It focuses mainly on Tig, who is trying to help Kozik's daughter, who has stumbled onto a child porn ring and is running for her life. The art is pretty dead on for likenesses and the story reads like an episode of the series.

Season 4: The US Attorney thing kinda sucked, but Danny Trejo was cool.
Just finished Season 4. The US Attorney stuff didn't bother me so much as the artificial drama created by revealing Juice's father was black. I find it difficult to believe John Teller, who was painted as a sort of a hippie-type, would craft an MC charter that specifically outlawed blacks. Or that anybody in the club would give a shit if they found out. It'd make them all racists and unlikable jagoffs. And that shaky premise is what motivated that entire story arc all season. And ultimately it meant fuckall.

The 2-part season finale was "Whhaaa---the fuck??" with the Trejo reveal. And then Jax sitting down at the head of the table was pretty epic. Starting season 5 tomorrow.

Something tiny I noticed and appreciated. In the second season Jax decides to go Nomad and cuts the VP and Redwood patches off his cut, then later he sews them back on in a rushed and poorly manner. Every episode after that, you could tell his patches had that jury rigged sew job for the next two seasons. It's a minor detail, but I liked that his vest had that history to it.
